PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach supports team coaching, training, and skill development to prepare student-athletes for competition.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach supports team coaching, training, and skill development to prepare student-athletes for competition.
Key Responsibilities:
Support student-athletes’ academic, athletic, and personal development. Assist with recruitment of academically and athletically qualified student-athletes. Build relationships with alumni, donors, and the community to promote the program. Help organize camps, clinics, and represent the program at events. Stay informed and compliant with NAIA, Sun Conference, and University policies. Follow all guidelines set by NAIA, Sun Conference, and Ave Maria University.
Major Duties:
1. Student-Athlete Development Provide technical instruction and lead individual training sessions. Help create and implement practice plans for competition readiness. Mentor athletes and integrate Catholic faith and virtues into coaching. 2. Recruitment and Retention Evaluate, recruit, and retain student-athletes who fit the program and university values. Communicate with recruits and their families. Plan scouting efforts and manage recruiting events. Assist with official/unofficial campus visits. 3. Academics, Service, and Public Engagement Monitor academic progress to ensure eligibility and degree completion. Support fundraising efforts within university guidelines. Organize community service projects to reflect the university’s mission of service.
EDUCATION
Bachelor’s Degree Required
EXPERIENCE
Previous basketball coaching or playing experience required, preferably at the collegiate level.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
General knowledge of basketball, rules & regulations. Must possess excellent teaching, organizational and communication skills, as well as the ability to pay close attention to details, interact effectively and appropriately with student athletes and evaluate prospects. Must show a demonstrated knowledge of and strong commitment to the mission of the university and the teachings of the Catholic Church. The assistant coach is responsible for supporting the university in the formation of student athletes in the intellectual and moral virtues of the Catholic faith.
PHYSICAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Requires ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to teach the fundamentals of the sport, coach practices, games, travel to other locations; and the ability to stand, walk and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10 – 50 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a telephone, computer keyboard, operate equipment and read technical information.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed indoors and outdoors with potential for outdoor exposure to high temperatures, and safety and health hazards related to sport and weight room training. Will travel for recruiting and competition.
