Full-Time Xavier University of Louisiana, an NAIA institution located in New Orleans, LA, is seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic leader to serve as the inaugural Head Coach for the Xavier University Men’s/Women’s Varsity Rowing program. This position is responsible for all aspects of practice and competition preparation, recruitment of student-athletes, and the comprehensive administration of the program. This includes, but is not limited to, recruitment and retention of academically and athletically qualified student-athletes, overall program administration, practice, and competition. This position is expected to develop a team that is competitive with programs of a similar size across the US and showcase the first HBCU rowing program in the country. AA/EOE Minimum Qualifications A bachelor’s degree is required from an accredited college or university, with previous successful college coaching and/or playing experience preferred. A strong commitment to the student first concept and a working knowledge of NAIA rules and regulations is required. Strong organization, oral, written communication and computer skills are required. Working knowledge of social media platforms (i.e., Facebook, Instagram, Twitter). The position requires frequent travel. Preferred Qualifications Collegiate and/or professional rowing experience.
Minimum US Rowing Level 2 coaching certification
CPR/First Aid Certification Special Requirements Summary Work Hours Full time. Early morning, evenings and weekends required. KSA’s Knowledge, Education, Experience, and Proficiencies Coordinate and run regular practices both on the water and indoor for fall and winter seasons, teaching the core fundamentals of rowing and focusing on improving each athlete’s technique and fitness individually and collectively.
Prepare athletes to race both head and sprint races, incorporating racing starts, race plans, moves, sprints.
Plan and implement each season’s programming and competitive event schedules.
Manage team travel to regattas including accommodation, meals, and transportation of equipment
Teach and instill the values of teamwork, kindness, inclusivity and work ethic.
Implement, monitor, and follow all aspects of safety procedures (on-water and within and around the boathouse).
Work with the New Orleans Rowing Club to share resources including equipment and water time
Oversee basic rigging and maintenance of the rowing shells and boathouse and land facilities as needed
Develop and grow the nation’s first HBCU coed rowing program Essential Duties and Responsibilities Essential Duties and Responsibilities Description Experience coaching at various levels of rowing ability, preferably some experience at the collegiate level and with rowers of diverse backgrounds
Ability to drive and operate motorized coaching launch
Ability to safely coordinate practices with multiple athletes on the Bayou St. John Waterway and coordinate with the New Orleans Rowing Club to schedule events and practices
Ability and knowledge to assist with equipment upkeep
Assist in setting and adjusting boat rigging/oar inboard/outboard for all athletes
Ability to execute spring and fall racing schedules, lineups, travel to regattas, and races
Ability to interact with and recruit high school and transfer athletes interested in rowing at the college level
Comfort working with athletes new to the sport, helping develop those athletes to be competitive novice level rowers
Awareness of and sensitivity toward the specific challenges of rowers of color
Ability to effectively communicate and counsel student-athletes on requirements for personal conduct, academic performance, and athletic performance.
