The ability to teach fundamental skills of your sport, sportsmanship, safety, strategy, team play, physical/mental fitness and nutrition is paramount for a successful coach to demonstrate on a daily basis. Assistant Coach Include:
(note: assistant coaches report directly to their head coach for assignment(s) of duties listed below) Teach and enforce the “Monarch Expectations” in the student/athlete handbook. Establish team guidelines and policies and procedures for enforcement, within Methodist University and NCAA guidelines. Conduct tryouts for selection of varsity and, if needed, junior varsity squads. Plan trips and make team travel arrangements. Arrange for systematic purchase, issuance, storage, maintenance care and inventory of equipment and uniforms. Obtain and supervise team managers. Scout opposing teams as necessary, develop game plan strategies and coach team during games and practices. Assist Head Coaches with practice and games. Adhere to and enforce all Methodist University, USA-South and NCAA rules. Inform student-athletes of eligibility rules and prepare appropriate eligibility paperwork. Supervise and accompany team members on away from home trips. Recruit within the expectations of the University. Organize and execute recruiting efforts for the program. Work closely with current student-athletes to enhance retention efforts for the program to include but not limited to, relationship building, team building, academic support, and individual skill and team development. Hold membership in professional associations. Advise the student/athlete academically. Monitor class attendance and academic progress of student/athletes. Supervise student employees within university guidelines. Maintain specific facilities as needed. Operate vehicles in a safe and conscientious manner on team trips and recruiting trips. Compliance Forms Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Coach and/or Director of Athletics. Bachelor’s Degree required; previous collegiate coaching and demonstrated experience in the recruitment and retention of student-athletes at the NCAA Division III level preferred. Successful candidates will demonstrate the potential for collaborative leadership, a high degree of personal initiative, and a commitment to student engagement and belonging. Candidates must have the ability to relate effectively to current and prospective student-athletes, exhibit strong time management and organizational skills, and demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as knowledge of NCAA and USA South Conference rules and regulations.
