The ideal candidate is passionate about distance running, student-athlete development, and fostering a culture of perseverance, discipline, and teamwork. This position plays a vital role in supporting student wellness, competition, and character formation through athletics.
Responsibilities:
Plan and lead structured practices focused on endurance, strength, proper running form, pacing, and race strategy. Develop individualized and team training plans to build fitness and reduce risk of injury Organize and supervise team participation in meets, including meet preparation, transportation, and day-of logistics. Promote a team culture aligned with Cristo Rey’s values—centered on personal growth, accountability, and sportsmanship. Monitor academic performance and support student-athletes in balancing academic and athletic commitments. Maintain and manage team gear and equipment as needed. Communicate effectively with student-athletes, families, and school administration regarding schedules, team expectations, and updates. Collaborate with the Athletic Director to ensure compliance with league rules, safety guidelines, and eligibility requirements.
Qualifications:
Prior coaching or competitive experience in cross country or distance running required. Knowledge of training techniques, recovery practices, and long-distance race strategy. Enthusiastic, motivational, and able to mentor student-athletes of varying ability levels. Strong organizational and communication skills. CPR/AED certification (or willingness to obtain). Valid driver’s license preferred (for team transportation). Understanding of adolescent development and holistic coaching approaches.
