Basic Skills Instructor (BSI)
Summary:
The role of the Basic Skills Instructor (BSI) is to facilitate a successful mathematics and literacy support program by planning a variety of activities and exercises to help students improve their mathematics and literacy skills. The goal is to provide targeted support and instruction that cultivates enhanced reading and mathematics achievement for all students. The Basic Skills Program provides support for students who have literacy and mathematics difficulties compared to their age and developmental level.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required. (Masters preferred) Orton Gillingham training preferred Motor Vehicle Operator’s License or ability to provide own transportation. Demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing using proper grammar and vocabulary. Demonstrate working knowledge of the use of various technological software and equipment for tasks such as, but not limited to, word processing, data management, information retrieval, visual presentations, and telecommunications. Knowledge of child growth and development, individual differences in ability, personality and interests and learning/motivational techniKnowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles. Knowledge of Smartboard functions and tools. Knowledge of grade specific school curriculum and concepts, including all subject matters taught. Literacy and Mathematics Support The Basic Skills Instructor role involves planning targeted lessons using the Orton-Gillingham approach and iReady program, while also collaborating with grade teachers to provide optimal student support and assess development needs. The specialist will deliver intensive small group instruction to students below benchmark, and offer support throughout the school day (excluding specials). Key responsibilities also include communicating student progress to the school director, assistant director of academics, teachers, and parents, as well as generating progress reports from assessment data. Furthermore, the specialist will create print-rich literacy environments with word walls, reading level charts, and phonics anchor charts, and establish mathematics focus walls with anchor charts, number lines, and vocabulary. Finally, the role requires attending professional development workshops to stay current on best practices in reading and math, and supporting the professional development of classroom teachers in meeting the needs of all students in mixed-ability classrooms. Assessment and Data The analysis of data from screening, progress monitoring and diagnostic assessments informs instructional planning for BSI students.
The Basic Skills Instructor will:
Administer screening assessments at the beginning of the school year to all K-3 students and analyze the data to identify students that have difficulties in reading and/or mathematics and may need additional support or intervention. Administer progress monitoring assessments to the BSI students to measure student progress at intervals throughout the school year and analyze the data to determine the effectiveness of the intervention instruction and modify instruction as needed. Administer individual diagnostic assessments as needed in order to gain additional data on student progress. Diagnostic measures are administered to students with severe reading difficulties to support instructional planning when standard intervention programs of increasing intensity have not been successful. Administer end of year assessments and provide information on student progress in reading and mathematics. Analyze data to determine decisions concerning focus, grouping, time, intensity, programs and approaches for each student. Organize data to ensure that it is easily accessible in order to be used for planning. Share data in a timely manner with the school director, assistant director of academics, chief academic officer and program directors. Communication Ongoing formal and informal communication and collaboration among staff are necessary for an effective BSI program. The Basic Skills Instructor will attend: Staff meetings to communicate general information, present assessment results, and conduct training that is pertinent to all grades as needed. Grade-level meetings to provide time to review assessment data, plan collaboratively, revise groupings, receive targeted technical assistance and training, and participate in study groups. These meetings include all teachers providing reading and mathematics instruction at the specified grade level. Individual teacher meetings with administrators and reading specialists/coaches to review the progress of each student, adjust groupings and intervention intensity, review and modify individual plans for BSI students, ensure pacing and program extension are adequate for all students, share challenges and successes, and arrange for specific technical assistance needs. Scheduled weekly common planning time for classroom teachers and other staff sharing instructional responsibilities for the same students. Monthly meetings with Basic Skills Instructors across the district to discuss best practices, intervention strategies, data analysis and student growth. Performs other related tasks as assigned by the School Director, Assistant Director of Academics, Assistant Director of Operations, and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Experience:
Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.
