Role Description Reporting to the Associate Director of Athletics and Recreation, the Head Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Coach is a 12-month full-time position responsible for all phases of leading a competitive Division III swimming and diving program. Department Overview The William Paterson University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation is an integral part of the University’s overall mission to provide its students with a comprehensive educational experience, one that stresses the importance of academic, personal, emotional, social and physical development. As a part of the University’s Division of Student Development the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has long been a source of pride for the entire campus community, thanks to the Pioneers’ outstanding achievements on and off the competitive fields of play. Currently sponsoring 13 NCAA Division III teams (baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, field hockey, football, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, women’s tennis, women’s volleyball), William Paterson is a member of the New Jersey Athletic Conference, one of the most competitive leagues in the nation. Responsibilities include but not limited to: Provide leadership, organization and supervision for a competitive Division III intercollegiate swimming and diving program. Planning, writing and overseeing a seasonal plan. Develop and implement daily practice plans, conditioning regiments, and skill development throughout the season. Executes practice organization and implementation and develops competition strategy. Coordinates competition schedule. Plan, coordinate, and supervise all team travel arrangements. Identifying prospective student-athletes, communicating with PSAs, and setting up visits. Recruit student-athletes within guidelines of William Paterson University and the NCAA. Works collaboratively with Office of Admissions. Monitors academic progress of student-athletes and develops and implements strategy for retention. Assists with development of team budget and abide by same. Manage team needs within parameters of the annual budget; review all budget requests and projected fiscal needs. Orders practice and competition equipment. Develops working relationship with athletic administration and support staff in the overall management of the swimming and diving program. Recommends the hiring of assistant coaches then oversees and evaluates the staff. Attends meetings, open house, and workshops as required. Adheres to all university, NCAA and NJAC policies and procedures and educate student-athletes about the same. Oversee and maintain regularly scheduled open swim sessions for the University community. Liaise with Events Scheduling for facility rentals. Conducts fundraising activities per university policies and procedures (spring training trip, etc.). Devises and distributes communication with swimming and diving alumni. Provides site supervision at home athletic contests and administrative assistance in the areas of academics, marketing, compliance and/or strength and conditioning. Complete all paperwork in a timely manner regarding rosters, purchase orders, meal expenses, eligibility forms, reimbursements, end-of-season reports. Perform other duties as assigned that are appropriate for the position.
Qualifications:
Required:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university. Three (3) or more years of post-graduation coaching experience at the collegiate, high school, or club level. Demonstrated ability to lead, develop and coach student-athletes. Proven track record applying and instructing sport specific skills, techniques, and strategies. Successful completion of the NCAA Division III rules test. Certification in CPR/AED. Valid NJ Adult Pool Supervisor or attained within 30 days of start date. Proficient with Microsoft Office and virtual communication (email, Teams, Zoom).
Preferred:
Master’s degree. Collegiate level swimming and diving coaching experience. Head coaching experience. Demonstrated ability to recruit qualified student-athletes at the collegiate level.
