Job Description
Associate Head Men’s Basketball Coach
- Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
- Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher).
Four (4) years of full time coaching experience at the college level in the sport of Basketball. In lieu of college-level coaching experience, a combination of five (5) years of coaching experience at the high school, college, professional, or national team level in the sport of Basketball and/or playing experience at the college, professional, or national team level in the sport of Basketball may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in administrative responsibilities in the sport of basketball (e.
g., team scheduling, budget preparation and administration, facility usage, public relations, fundraising, community service, and other daily operations). Prior recruiting experience. Previous experience with a Division I Athletic Program. Understanding of NCAA Compliance Rules (played a Division I, II or III sport, coached in collegiate athletics or as a staff member in a collegiate athletic program).
- Brief Description of Duties
- : The Associate Head Coach for a Division I program supports the Stony Brook University Athletics Department’s mission by assisting the head coach in all aspects of operating a successful sports program.
The Associate Head Coach will be responsible for recruiting, student-athlete skill instruction, team and game preparation, administrative responsibilities, monitoring academic progress, and ensuring compliance with NCAA regulations. They will use independent judgment and discretion in the identification and recruitment of prospective student-athletes, their development during their tenure at the university, and the daily administrative operations of the sport program. The Associate Head Coach will be evaluated on the extent to which they provide each student-athlete a positive, meaningful educational experience through athletics, supporting Athletics’ goals.

Recruiting:
- + Use independent discretion and judgment in identifying student-athletes capable of competing both academically and athletically at Stony Brook University.
Play a decisive role in the subsequent active recruitment of those identified student-athletes, and more importantly, they will award athletics scholarships, either independently or in conjunction with the head coach. Manage an assigned recruiting territory and identify prospective student-athletes through thorough research, by independently evaluating talent at local and national events, and initiating correspondence and maintaining relationships with coaches and prospects. Ensure compliance with NCAA, Conference, and University regulations.

Student-Athlete Skill Instruction/Team and Game Preparation:
- + Teach all basic and advanced skills required in the sport of Basketball.
Development of student-athletes occurs year round during individual skill sessions, team practices, and conditioning sessions (independent of the head coach). Independent development and implementation of sound and safe practice plans that successfully prepare the student-athletes with the fundamentals of the specific sport. Responsible for assisting the head coach in developing a comprehensive and strategic game plan for each scheduled contest throughout the season, including, evaluating upcoming opponents by breaking down game tapes, preparing a scouting report for the student-athletes and advising the head coach on making adjustments to the game plan during contests.

Administrative Responsibilities:
- + Responsible for coordinating team travel, contest scheduling, budget preparation and administration, and facility usage.
Will focus on managing the team’s annual operating budget and ensuring they stay within budget throughout the year. Manage public relations, marketing, fundraising, and community service activities. Responsible for creating and maintaining relationships across campus with various support services to include campus constituents.

Monitoring of Academic Progress of Student-Athletes:
- + In conjunction with the office of Student-Athlete Development, oversee the academic success of the student-athlete and assist with academic problems.
Provide guidance/counseling and support (as necessary) as well as supervises and monitors study halls (as assigned), checking class attendance, and organizing weekly and monthly (one on one) academic meetings with each student-athlete to track their progress by semester, by major, and by degree requirements.

NCAA Rules Compliance:
- + Responsible for knowledge of, and adherence to, NCAA rules and regulations pertaining to recruiting, eligibility, and general operation of the Basketball program.
Must pass the NCAA Recruiting Exam on an annual basis. Ensure compliance to prevent penalties such as suspension, termination, fines, loss of scholarships, and postseason bans. Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:
- This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption. In addition to the employee’s base salary, this position is eligible for $3,400 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
- Evening and weekend work will be required at times.
