  • Important Information:
  • Must be at least 17 years old to apply. As a Swim Teacher, you will provide private and group swim lessons for individuals of all ages and skill levels. Your goal is to create a fun, positive learning environment that encourages growth and improvement.
  • Responsibilities:
  • As a Water Safety Instructor, you will create an educational, safe, and welcoming experience for all participants.
  • Memorize and use Charleston Swim School’s approved curriculum and log students’ progress.
  • Stay aware of pool hazards and maintain constant supervision of students.
  • Arrive on time for each lesson and ensure you have reliable transportation (lesson locations may vary, as you will travel to the students’ local pools).
  • Be alert and prepared to provide first aid or handle emergencies (first aid kits are provided).
  • Foster a safe yet challenging environment for student growth.
  • Adapt your teaching methods to accommodate the age, experience, and ability of participants to help them meet course objectives.
  • As a swim teacher, participate in regular in-service training sessions.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, students, and parents.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned by your supervisor.
  • Qualifications:
  • Must have experience in aquatics, such as swim team participation, lifeguarding, or instructing.
  • Teachers must be positive, enthusiastic, accountable, and communicative. Experience with children is essential.
  • Must be able to perform all five strokes and float.
  • CPR and First Aid certification is required or must have held it previously and be willing to renew within two weeks of hiring.
  • Lifeguard training is preferred.
  • Water Safety Instructor certification is a plus but not required.
  • Preferred Knowledge and Skills:
  • Thorough understanding and application of swimming and water safety skills.
  • Knowledge of teaching swimming and water safety skills.
  • Familiarity with facility characteristics, rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Strong leadership, instruction, and public relations skills.
  • Excellent communication and decision-making skills.
  • Compensation & Benefits:
  • Starting pay: $20-24 per hour, with 4-20 hours per week (fewer hours in the fall and spring, more in the summer).

  • Higher consideration will be given to candidates with extensive swim and teaching experience.
