F00028 Location Morehouse College – Atlanta GA Position Summary The Division of Humanities, Social Sciences, Media and the Arts is seeking applications for a full-time, Assistant Professor of Sociology, Tenure-Track (TT). The successful candidate will have a teaching load of up to 6 courses per year, a research agenda centered in social justice, demography and health/ wellness, potential for innovation and leadership in broad areas of sociology with one or more foci related to theory and methods. It is important that the candidate have the desire, knowledge and skills to teach undergraduate statistics and research methods courses annually. An additional expected feature of this teaching load will be contribution(s) to the College’s General Education Program. We are looking for a colleague who thinks creatively about their teaching, engages in scholarship, and can be committed to the mission of Morehouse College-to develop men with disciplined minds who lead lives of leadership and service by emphasizing the intellectual and character development of its students and by assuming a special responsibility for teaching the history and culture of black people. The Sociology department offers a broad range of courses. Applicants should have experience teaching a diverse group of students including non-majors. The start date is August 1, 2026. An official transcript will be required of the selected candidate. Required Qualifications A terminal degree in Sociology or related field with a minimum of 20 hours in the discipline. Preferred Qualifications A commitment to excellence in teaching; evidence of creative and scholarly work; and service to the profession and community is desired. Knowledge of pedagogical strategies and methods of student assessment appropriate for teaching undergraduate students.
Ability to convey complex ideas and techniques clearly. Demonstrated skill in computer literacy and instructional technology required. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities A Ph.D. in sociology is required at the time of appointment. We are particularly interested in candidates with demonstrated skills and knowledge of statistics, data analytics, big data, data visualization, or other areas of data science-broadly defined. Preference will be given to those with experience teaching Medical sociology, demography and statistics. Familiarity with coding and data analysis programs such as SPSS, STATA, and R and visualization tools such as PowerBI and Tableau is desired. Compensation Salary will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the qualifications of the selected candidate, budget availability, and internal equity. Salary will be disbursed in 12 equal monthly installments. Teaching Responsibility 3 – 3 teaching load or 18 credit hours per year, including undergraduate statistics and research methods (every year). Essential Duties/Responsibilities At minimum, applicants should be able to:
Develop course content and other course materials in support of course and learning outcomes and adhere to departmental requirements.
Prepare, administer, and grade assignments and examinations in a timely manner to inform students about their progress and to provide opportunities that will allow students to succeed.
Schedule and maintain appropriate office hours proportionate to the instructional assignment and provide timely communication to students utilizing Morehouse network.
Utilize instructional technology (Banner, Canvas, and Starfish) required by Morehouse College, including maintaining an online grade book and keeping accurate records of grades and attendance.
