The Marine Transportation Department is currentlyrecruiting for three non-tenure-track LECTURERS or tenure-track
ASSISTANT
PROFESSORS, which are full-time, 10-month facultypositions.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The incumbent will beassigned various Marine Transportation, Navigation, NauticalOperations, and Maritime Technology courses as the needs of theDepartment, the Chair, and their background allow. Participation intwo out of three summer sea terms on an annual basis is expectedand will be compensated in addition to the annual salary.
- Theincumbents report to the Chair of the Department of MarineTransportation and will be assigned courses in Vessel Operations,Seamanship, Rescue Craft, Management and Maritime Regulation, Basicand Advanced Navigation, Celestial Navigation, Ship Handling, Rulesof the Road, Stability, Ships Construction, License Preparation,and Simulator Operations.
It can include other courses as well, atthe discretion of the Chair, as the needs of the Department dictateand their background allows
- Several ship and license-relatedclasses involve experiential education components, includingteaching outdoors on the pier, operating and commanding smallvessels, evolutions onboard the Training Ship or in the swimmingpool, and the external fire fighting field. Candidates must becomfortable teaching in both these environments and the classroom
- The selected individual will participate in campus and departmentalcommittee assignments and be active and involved in the MaritimeIndustry through publication, participation in regulatory events,or industry conferences as the needs of the Department and at thediscretion of the Chair may require
Requirements:
RequiredQualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Transportation,Marine Operations, or a similar, related field
- STCW OPERATIONALLevel License, Unlimited/Oceans with experience as either a Thirdor Second Mate on US-Flag merchant vessels of unlimited tonnagevessels. Sea service on foreign flag vessels for mariners who alsopossess a US license is acceptable.
- Experience on commercialvessels of any type commensurate with experience, includingmilitary sealift, dry cargo, and liquid cargo, gas, bulk,container, passenger, offshore, inland / brown water, etc.
- Current familiarity and experience in the international regulatoryenvironment and
SMS Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience inMaritime education and /or training or familiarizationresponsibilities, ashore or afloat
- Management-level licensure andcommensurate experience
- Graduate Degree(s) in a field relevant tothe needs of the Maritime Industry
- Endorsements such as TankermanPIC DL, LG, Barge, DP, Crowd Mgmt., TOAR, and any such relevantlicensure endorsements that enhance the candidate’s knowledge baseand proficiency
- Graduate of a recognized Maritime AcademyExceptions
- License may be in continuity, but preference will begiven to active licenses, including a current Medical Certificate
- Relevant USN, USCG, or NOAA sea experience will be considered, butcommercial experience
- International / non-US-Licensedprofessional mariners and non-degreed (hawsepipe) licensed marinerswill be considered should the nature or availability of the pool ofapplicants warrant.

Classification:
The Lecturer and Assistant Professor10 Months UUPpositions. The anticipated salary will be $66,000.00 to $80,000.00for the contract and includes an outstanding benefits package (formore information, please see the UUP Full-TimeBenefits-at-a-Glance).
