The Faculty in Residence serves as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Messina College while residing on the Brookline Campus of Boston College. As a fully residential community for first-generation Associate’s degree students, Messina College students live and learn on this campus in two residential villages with access to all University programs and facilities. The Faculty in Residence provides an academic presence, leadership, and mentorship in the residence halls. They provide academic presence by 1) modeling and discussing academic life; 2) sharing their research and teaching interests with students through residence hall programming; 3) creating opportunities for their faculty colleagues to engage in seminars and lectures; and 4) encouraging reflection and dialogue about campus, community, and social issues within the context of an annually selected theme (e.g., justice and the common good, etc.). Essential Responsibilities of the Faculty in Residence Helps cultivate the development of a community of scholars around an annual theme in the halls, bridging the living and learning environments.
In collaboration with Residence Hall staff, graduate assistants, and resident assistants, supports creative programming (both recurring and one-time events) that encourages the creation of an environment that promotes belonging, academic success, and respect.
Works with the Assistant Director of Residential Life and Student Engagement, the Graduate Assistant for Residential Life and Student Engagement, and the Resident Minister to provide Brookline Campus residents with opportunities to cultivate a desire for intellectual inquiry inside and outside the classroom.
Creates co-curricular connections between the classroom and the residence hall through the creation of speaking programs and academic skill building conversations.
Maintains a positive presence in the residence halls through visibility and accessibility to students.

Qualifications:

Qualifications for Faculty in Residence A terminal degree in English Composition, English Literature, Creative Writing, Rhetoric or a related field is required.
Demonstrated interest in the undergraduate experience, particularly for first-generation students Living on campus is a requirement of this position. As such, Faculty in Residence are provided a furnished apartment in a residence hall on the Brookline Campus with free basic utilities (electricity, water, and internet). A partial dining stipend is also provided for engagement with students on campus. This is a live-in, year-to-year appointment. The initial contract is for one year and is renewable once, after favorable review, for a maximum of 2 years. The Faculty in Residence is provided with a one course reduction per year. A programming plan and budget is reviewed monthly with the Dean and the Assistant Director of Residential Life and Student Engagement. For Academic Year 2025-26, Messina College invites applications for the position of Visiting Assistant Professor of English to teach First-Year Writing, Introduction to Literature, and Public Speaking. The teaching load is 6 courses per year with the anticipated distribution of 2 courses in the summer and 2 courses in each of the fall and spring semesters. A release of one course per year is offered for faculty-in-residence responsibilities. Applicants may learn more about Messina College at www.bc.edu/messina.
