We seek an outstanding individual to establish a nationally recognized, externally funded research program in marine optics and remote sensing. The successful candidate will have expertise in hyperspectral remote sensing of phytoplankton, harmful algal blooms, aquatic ecosystem biodiversity, coastal water quality, and greenhouse gas fluxes in coastal marsh and mangrove habitats. The research focus must include responses of coastal marine systems to climate change, extreme events, and anthropogenic stressors. The successful candidate’s research must entail the development of satellite remote sensing algorithms based on marine optical theory, field observations, and hyperspectral remote sensing. The candidate’s expertise must include the integration of remote sensing data with other data products including outputs from computer models and machine learning to study ocean processes, particularly in the coastal oceans and estuaries. The successful candidate must have an established record of funding with current grants from NASA, NOAA, USGS, ERDC, and USACE. An established record of peer-reviewed publication demonstrating expertise in coastal carbon capture in a delta system is required. The successful candidate will also have expertise in Python package development for visualizing and analyzing hyperspectral PACE-Mission color data.
The successful candidate will teach one course per semester that will include a rotation of introductory and upper-level undergraduate courses in marine science and environmental science. Teaching responsibilities will also include a graduate class in the candidate’s area of research expertise. The successful candidate will also contribute faculty committee service within the unit. This position will expand the SEOE’s existing strengths in remote sensing, bio-optical and biophysical research, coastal water quality, and application of artificial intelligence in
geosciences.
The SEOE is a multidisciplinary unit within the College of Arts and Sciences, with academic programs in Marine Science, Environment and Sustainability (Environmental Science and Environmental Studies), Geology and Geophysics. The unit consists of approximately 600 undergraduate students, more than 60 graduate students, and 35 faculty representing research areas ranging from physical to social sciences, including marine, environmental, and geological sciences. The SEOE houses excellent analytical facilities, including Stable Isotope Laboratories, Radioisotope & Marine Sediments Laboratory, and The Center for Elemental Mass Spectrometry.
The candidate is encouraged to consider research opportunities within their area of expertise that would leverage the infrastructure available at the Baruch Marine Field Laboratory (located on the edge of the North Inlet Estuary and adjacent Winyah Bay). For more information, please visit the SEOE website.
