Job Description Tennessee State University invites applications for the Assistant Professor-Meat Science position. This is a 12-month, tenure-track position in the Department of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
Duties will include research, outreach, and teaching with the primary focus on research in an area of meat science with emphasis on meat quality, carcass composition, product development, meat safety, and(or) postmortem processing methodologies.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent, extramurally funded research program supporting the needs of Tennessee livestock producers and meat processors to maintain and market safe and healthy meat products. Development of strategies to increase livestock harvest capacity in the region is a priority. The successful applicant will be expected to generate research data suitable for research publications and outreach factsheets. The individual assuming this position will be expected to interact and collaborate with other departmental researchers working in the areas of meat animal production and food science. Working relationships with livestock producer groups, meat processors, and other meat industry interests should be developed. The university maintains research populations of cattle, goats, and poultry. The successful candidate will be engaged in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. Minimum Qualifications An earned Ph.D. degree in meat science, animal science, muscle biology or other related discipline is required. Postdoctoral research/industry experience is desirable. Candidates should have demonstrated verbal and written communication skills in a professional academic setting. The applicant should have experience with livestock harvesting, carcass fabrication, meat quality assurance, and meat industry HACCP protocol requirements. Evidence of working with diverse stakeholders and in team settings is desired. Ability to attract extramural funding to support research and outreach activities within the meat science discipline is essential. A record of scientific publications is expected. Grant writing efforts should also be presented. Indicate experience in mentoring students. Candidates must be supportive of the tripartite Land-Grant mission of teaching, research and extension.
