Job Summary East Tennessee State University Department of Music seeks a talented cellist with a strong pedagogical background to fill a nine-month, tenure-track assistant professor position. The successful candidate will begin August 2025, and will teach applied cello to undergraduate and graduate students, coach small chamber ensembles, teach string pedagogy and string literature courses to string majors, and teach methods courses in string pedagogy to music education students. Other courses may be assigned based on departmental needs. The successful candidate will also serve as Coordinator of the String Area within the Department of Music. This requires strong organizational skills and an ability to communicate professionally and clearly with colleagues. The individual in this position will perform solo recitals, and collaborate with colleagues and guest artists; recruit and retain high-quality cello students; develop and maintain visibility in the state, region, and nation as a performer and clinician; maintain and expand relationships with private string studios in the region; adjudicate and participate in state, regional, and national music organizations; cultivate positive alumni and community relationships; participate in university committee work, and perform other departmental duties as assigned by the chair. The successful candidate will oversee the distribution of all string area scholarships (for all string instruments).
Though not required, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to teach in the Department’s Pre-College program, providing applied lessons to elementary and secondary students.
