Job Title Lead Instructor of Communication
Job Description This is a full-time, 9-month position. The faculty member must instruct assigned courses in accordance with NCCCS curriculum standards and course descriptions in addition to the standards and guidelines set forth by the program accreditation entity. Courses may be scheduled for day, evening, or weekends, and in WCC’s service area (Wilkes, Ashe, and/or Alleghany) and high schools.

Essential Duties Summary The Lead Instructor position includes the following responsibilities and expectations:
Teach a load of 18-25 contact hours comprised of communication courses, plus a minimum of 5 scheduled office hours each week.
Hold required office hours each day. Plan, create, and maintain a classroom environment conducive to student learning.
Maintain a high level of currency in the discipline and incorporate innovative and creative instructional techniques in the classroom. Plan and deliver learning-centered, outcomes-based instruction via traditional classroom, interactive video, virtual/synchronous, and internet/asynchronous formats.
Serve as a faculty mentor for students toward completion of program, diploma, or degree.
Refer students, as appropriate, to student support areas of WCC including Resource Connections, Counseling and/or Student Support Services, and the Academic Support Center. Attend commencement exercises, committee meetings, task force meetings, and division meetings as scheduled.
Support career and college promise classes and instructors to ensure curriculum alignment and student success.
Be dedicated to continuous improvement through assessment and evidence-based decision-making.
Serve on division and college committees, as assigned.
Participate in professional development.
Maintain a working knowledge of the North Carolina Community College Combined Course Library and Curriculum Standards and ensure the Wilkes Community College catalog listings and discipline webpage information are current and accurate.
Assist the Departmental Chairperson and/or Dean of the Division in maintaining academic currency (in conjunction with other full-time faculty members in the discipline, if any) by providing leadership for curriculum revision and development. Assist the Departmental Chairperson and/or Dean of Division in long and short-range planning and determining an annual budget. Assist the Departmental Chairperson and/or Dean of the Division with semester scheduling, textbook orders, and other administrative planning tasks as needed.
Recommend appropriate and current equipment, perform equipment inventories, maintain equipment in good working condition, and take necessary steps to ensure student safety around equipment. Recruit, mentor, and evaluate qualified adjunct instructors (in conjunction with Departmental Chairperson and/or Dean of Division, as appropriate).
Collaborate with the Communication department among all campus locations (Wilkes, Ashe, and Alleghany) in the creation of syllabi; the alignment of objectives, competencies, and assessments; and the selection of textbooks, periodicals, and other resources. Demonstrate commitment to WCC’s mission, vision, and core values.
Support the college’s initiatives to enhance the learning environment and execute its mission. Fulfill other responsibilities as assigned by the Departmental Chairperson, Dean of Division, or Vice President of Instruction. Required Qualifications Master’s degree with at least 18 graduate hours in the teaching discipline of Communication.
Preferred Qualifications Experience teaching college-level communication courses in seated, online, and blended formats is preferred. Physical Demands This position operates in a professional academic office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment. This position regularly requires long hours and some weekend work. Travel as appropriate to achieve community college objectives, attend meetings, and implement strategic initiatives.
While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee must lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus. May be required to work some evenings and Saturdays.
