Central Carolina Community College (CCCC) seeks an innovative and collaborative leader to serve as Department Chair for Criminal Justice. This position provides academic and administrative leadership to the Criminal Justice curriculum program and plays a key role in supporting student success and workforce development through strong collaboration with Public Safety Continuing Education and the Emergency Services Training Center.
The Department Chair will ensure the program curriculum is current, aligned with industry standards, and strategically connected to other public safety disciplines. A key focus of this role is to ensure students are exposed to the full spectrum of public safety careers and training opportunities, maximizing shared resources and identifying pathways between continuing education and curriculum programs.
Salary depends on education and experience.
Master’s Degree salary range: $68,081 – $78,795
Doctorate Degree salary range: $72,738 – $83,205

This position may have occasional travel between campuses and for training. Occasional after hours may be required. This position requires face to face teaching. Essential Duties

Teaching Responsibilities:

Embrace the institutional goals of Central Carolina Community College by engaging students as full partners in the learning process, removing barriers to student progression in courses, and supporting and assisting students in achieving their educational and career goals. Use student learning outcomes to create a variety of activities, assignments, and assessments that ensure curriculum goals are met. Create a dynamic instructional environment that promotes a positive, interactive, and inclusive learning experience for all students.
Maintain a Blackboard course with a syllabus and gradebook for each class.
Grade all assignments in a timely manner and ensure that all grades are reported within the 10-day college grading policy. Provide personalized and constructive feedback on student assignments by recognizing what students did well and identifying attainable improvements for future work.
Respond to all student communication within two business days.
Report attendance weekly.
Utilize the early alert system to communicate needs for timely intervention, resources, and additional student support.
Facilitate student learning for instructional loads of 12-15 contact hours per semester.
Actively support the college’s vision of exceptional learning for all.

Advising Responsibilities:

Meet with each assigned advisee a minimum of once per semester to discuss educational, career, and life goals.
Connect students with their career communities to explore career options, build supportive relationships, and confirm career goals.
Review and approve student educational plans each semester.
Refer advisees to institutional and/or community resources as appropriate.
Complete required faculty advisor training.
Provide departmental advising assistance during the summer when 9-month faculty are off-contract.

Leadership/Management/Supervision:

Ensure the department maintains accurate records and submits timely reports and contracts.
Update academic dean and provost, as applicable, regarding departmental concerns.
Recruit, hire, onboard, and supervise faculty.
Determine faculty meet and maintain credentialing requirements. Conduct annual performance appraisals for departmental personnel. Oversee departmental course schedule and assign faculty to sections.
Collaboratively evaluate departmental needs for program review and planning and budgeting purposes.
Prepare annual departmental budget request, incorporating needs assessment and estimated expenses.
Monitor departmental budget throughout the fiscal year, communicating allocations, transferring funds as necessary, and alerting your supervisor to any concerns.
Conduct regular departmental meetings and distribute information as appropriate.
Promote professional development to ensure faculty stay current in their discipline and develop new skills.

Curriculum/Program Coordination:

Ensure program learning outcomes and student learning outcomes are developed and updated as needed for each program and all courses in the department. Ensure quality and consistent instruction. Coordinate the administration of all proficiency exams.
Oversee the evaluation and selection of course materials, and prepare and submit textbook orders to the bookstore manager, as applicable.
Design, implement, and maintain an effective student, faculty, and staff recruitment plan for all programs. Oversee the planning and execution of relevant career community events in conjunction with other stakeholders.
Design and implement a plan for improving and tracking student retention for all curricula within the department. Ensure outcomes and assessments review for all programs within the department is completed in a timely manner. Oversee the selection and maintain an inventory of all departmental equipment, materials, and supplies. Organize and maintain an active advisory board for all programs within the department. Incorporating principles of the business and industry leadership team (BILT) model, host a minimum of one meeting per year and submit minutes of those meetings to the division dean and document in departmental files. Build relationships with business, industry, and professional agencies relevant to the department and encourage faculty to do the same.
Direct the development of new curricula to meet the demands of the labor market and the recommendations of the program’s advisory board. Schedule classes, assign faculty, and collaborate with other departments to ensure course offerings coincide with student needs. Collaborate with college stakeholders to plan and implement activities with high school and four year university partners, as applicable. Work closely with Public Safety Continuing Education and Emergency Services Training Center staff to:
Coordinate shared use of resources, instructional spaces, and training facilities.
Identify crosswalk education opportunities between curriculum and non-credit public safety offerings.
Develop interdisciplinary learning experiences that expose students to law enforcement, fire services, EMS, emergency management, and related fields.
Cooperate with appropriate Continuing Education personnel on the development of credit and non-credit courses, creation of course outlines, and assignment of faculty as needed. Cooperate with the library to ensure that an adequate quantity of up-to-date library materials are available.

Institutional Responsibilities:

Engage students in co-curricular career community activities to foster student development and establish a sense of belonging.
Stay current in your discipline and renew industry credentials, as needed.
Maintain program and/or college accreditation standards.
Actively engage with college committees as appointed.
Participate in advisory board meetings as requested.
Celebrate student achievement at graduation ceremonies and other recognitions.
Engage in a minimum of 5 hours of professional development each year.
Attend departmental, divisional, and collegewide meetings.
Maintain a weekly schedule of 35 hours on campus, including 5 required office hours. Hours on site may be adjusted based on distance education responsibilities and/or approved telework arrangements.
Assume other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements
Master’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Safety, or a closely related field with 18 graduate hours in criminal justice.
Minimum of five (5) years of experience in criminal justice or a related public safety discipline.
Preferred Requirements
Teaching experience in a community college setting. Experience in the Criminal Justice field that includes criminal investigations, corrections, probation/parole, or a closely related area.
Experience teaching using a learning management system (e.g. Blackboard, Canvas, Moodle, etc.)
Experience working with both credit (curriculum) and non-credit (continuing education) programs.
Bilingual.
