The successful applicant will coordinate all aspects of the curriculum and operation of the upper division undergraduate courses and laboratories in the Department, as well as assisting in instruction in undergraduate courses.
General Responsibilities:
Coordinate the technical and administrative operation of all upper division laboratories in the Chemistry Department, under direction of faculty coordinators. Prepare instructional materials for weekly laboratory sessions. Teach selected laboratories and submit student course grades. Coordinate the selection of graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants for designated laboratories. Maintain knowledge of relevant instructional content for advanced studies in upper-level chemistry courses. Close collaboration with Chemistry faculty in curricular development.
Specific duties and responsibilities include:
Teaches laboratory sessions in selected laboratory sequences i.e., Physical and Synthetic Methods (CH 333), Separations and Spectroscopy (CH 444), Quantitative/Instrumental Analysis (CH 355L) Performs weekly stockroom preparation for each course and manages ordering and tracking of chemical inventory associated with the courses Handles management and safe handling of chemical waste associated with the laboratory courses in accordance with UAB Environmental Health and Safety policies Assists with training of graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants in the courses listed above in instructional methods appropriate for advanced studies in physical/inorganic/analytical chemistry Assists with training of graduate students on the use of instrumentation used in the laboratory courses including NMR, FTIR, GC-MS, ICP-OES, and UV-vis Takes an active approach to promoting safety in the laboratory courses by working with the Office of Environmental Health and Safety as well as the Department Chemical Safety Officers to ensure compliance with UAB safety mandates Assists with management of the Course Canvas pages for each of the courses Provides direct laboratory instruction for Physical and Synthetic Methods and Separations and Spectroscopy courses Works directly with the Department of Chemistry faculty who teach in the upper division classes to develop innovative and relevant laboratory experiences Participates in ongoing research related to laboratory content and development of laboratory experiences in the areas of physical/inorganic/quantum chemistry Performs other duties as assigned
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
Teaches laboratory sessions in selected laboratory sequences, i.e., Introductory Chemistry I and II (CH 106 & CH 108); General Chemistry I and II (CH 116 & CH 118) and Honors General Chemistry (CH 126 & CH 128). Prepares course syllabi for all three laboratory sequences. Supervises the weekly stockroom preparation of in-person laboratory experiments for all three sequences. Schedules and supervises graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants in all three sequences. Supervises the ongoing training of teaching assistants in instructional methods appropriate for Page 2 of 3 undergraduate university laboratories. Supervises the ongoing training of teaching assistants in modern chemical safety techniques in undergraduate laboratories and implementation of UAB safety and waste disposal protocols. Works with the Office of Environmental Health and Safety to ensure compliance with UAB safety mandates. Develops and manages the course Canvas pages for all sections, including updates to shared content for the online sections of the introductory labs. Provides direct instruction for the Honors General Chemistry laboratory sections and/or unassigned general chemistry sections. Works directly with the Department of Chemistry faculty who teach in the first-year lecture classes to ensure lecture and laboratory content coordination. Prepares, administers and grades examinations and quizzes for selected laboratories for which have assigned responsibilities. Prepares summarized reports of grades and provides them to course instructors. Performs other duties as assigned.
Salary Pay Range:
$43,890 – $71,320
Qualifications Education & Experience:
Bachelor s degree in chemistry or a related field. Work experience may NOT substitute for the education requirement. None required.
Preferences:
An M.S. in Chemistry or closely related field is required. Successful candidates should have experience in undergraduate instruction, and/or experience in laboratory design and maintenance.
