Under general direction, the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) Program Specialist will lead the development, organization, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of the grades K-12 instructional programs as they pertain to gifted/talented programs, honors and advanced placement courses. The Program Specialist also acts as an instructional support staff to ensure that all students meet and exceed the Alabama College and Career Ready Standards. The Program Specialist will also work with school principals, in consultation with parents, teachers, school counselors and other appropriate personnel, and will have the prime responsibility for decisions in relation to the education of gifted and talented students.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and other stakeholders in the overall education plan for identified gifted and high-ability learners. Assist in the development and implementation of the gifted education plan. Model a good record of attendance, punctuality, and other executive functioning skills. Instruct students in a program of study that is concept-based or project-based in nature that aligns with ALSDE Gifted Standards, the Alabama Course of Study, and other initiatives of Birmingham City Schools. Provide a wide variety of instructional and technological resources as a part of learning activities and experience. Collaborate with the teacher of record to develop learning activities and supplementary materials to help extend the core curriculum for gifted and high-ability students. Create and implements robust and engaging learning activities and experiences that actively engage and appropriately challenge students. Establish and maintains effective classroom management through the implementation of research-based best practices and provides supervision of students throughout the day. Monitor and evaluates the academic, social, and emotional growth of students, as evident through progress monitoring and record-keeping. Communicate regularly with parents, guardians, and/or families of students on a consistent basis relative to student progress. Administer standardized testing as a part of the identification process. Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

A bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred) is required from a regionally accredited college or university. Proper certification according to the Alabama State Department Teacher and Certification Office. Gifted certification preferred. At least five (5) years of successful teaching experience. Experience with curriculum development, standards, and assessment. Experience in educational leadership for classroom management techniques and a variety of effective instructional strategies.
