Coordinator of Special Education Position Summary:

The Coordinator of Special Education leads the district’s efforts to provide a full continuum of services for students with disabilities in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) regulations. This individual is responsible for ensuring high-quality instructional support, compliance with special education law, and equitable access to services for all eligible students. The coordinator also oversees district-wide MTSS and RTI processes to support all learners through tiered intervention systems.

Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university Professional leadership certificate issued by the Alabama State Department of Education prior to starting date At least five years of successful teaching and/or leadership experience in special education, administration, or related areas Demonstrated knowledge of federal and state laws related to student discipline, attendance, and equity (e.g., Title IX, IDEA, ADA, compulsory attendance laws) Fingerprint clearance with the Alabama State Department of Education prior to the start date

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Supervise all special education programs and services and serve as the primary contact for mediation, due process, and state complaints Supervise special education staff, including coordinators, teachers, therapists, and paraprofessionals, to ensure service delivery Ensure compliance with IDEA, Section 504, and all relevant state and federal mandates Develop, monitor, and evaluate the implementation of IEPs and 504 Plans Coordinate the district-wide MTSS and RTI processes to ensure effective tiered interventions for all students Guide school teams in analyzing data and determining appropriate student interventions Provide guidance and technical assistance to school leaders and teachers Coordinate child find efforts and ensure timely evaluation and re-evaluation of students suspected of having disabilities Prepare required reports for the Alabama State Department of Education and Board of Education Lead professional learning for staff regarding best practices in special education, inclusive instruction, MTSS implementation, etc. Monitor special education and student support budgets and ensure effective use of resources Collaborate with general education, federal programs, and student services departments to align supports Perform other duties as assigned by the
