The primary focus will be on delivering recycling and waste prevention programs through school and community tours and presentations, and at community events. The position reports to the Education & Outreach Supervisor, and requires reliability and accountability in all aspects of the defined role. Essential Functions & Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Conducts school and community tours and special events in industrial facilities during the work week, and on evenings, weekends and holidays. Conducts community presentations and special events at various locations throughout Palm Beach County during the work week, and on evenings, weekends and holidays. Teaches lessons in public and private school classrooms that integrate the Florida Standard objectives with environmental topics, such as composting, hazardous waste, landfills, recycling, waste management, waste reduction and yard waste. For outdoor programs, conducts tours on nature trails and develops educational materials to support nature trail lessons in accordance with Florida Standard objectives. Develops and implements programs and special projects targeting youth and adults. Creates, reviews and updates lesson plans and teacher resource materials that incorporate the Florida State education standard objectives. Develops and edits presentations in various forms Assists with the development of collateral materials, including but not limited to display boards, photos with captions, promotional materials, social media posts, website updates and educational videos. Researches and reviews recycling and waste prevention education programs from other agencies and organizations. Assembles materials for distribution to educators. Inputs data into SWA’s database program for tracking and scheduling purposes. Operates agency passenger vehicles; Drives 28-passenger bus and assists in keeping bus records and maintaining clean bus. Serves as backup customer service representative, assisting with telephone inquiries and data entry related to the SWA’s residential and commercial recycling programs. Locates properties correctly and informs the public of current policies and procedures regarding general county recycling information in residential and commercial programs. Skilled in public speaking.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, administrative and governmental officials, and colleagues. Knowledge of educational principles and practices, including writing curriculum, and State of Florida educational standards. Ability to coordinate and implement presentations, tours, special events and meetings. Experience writing educational content, detailed reports, plans or scripts. Excellent planning, organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize and complete work within shifting deadlines. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams) and database programs. Ability to read maps with sufficient knowledge of the Palm Beach County area. Use of office machines, such as personal computers, photocopy machines, laminating machines and other standard office equipment. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to solve problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses The ideal candidate possesses the education and experience listed below. BA or BS degree in education, natural sciences, communication, public relations, or related field required Prior experience conducting educational and informative presentations to schools and the general public preferred Experience as an environmental educator or teacher highly desired Experience in technical or scientific work; recreation management; park- or tour-related work; archaeological or historical preservation research work; program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation or management of natural areas or similar operations preferred Experience working special events Any equivalent combination or experience and education that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities accepted

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES

Valid Florida driver’s license and clean driving record. State of Florida CDL Class C license preferred, or willingness to be trained to drive a 28-passenger bus and obtain Class C license or Class B license with passenger endorsement. Ability to obtain School District of Palm Beach County contractor credentials, to include background check and fingerprinting. The employee is occasionally required to maneuver nature trails while transporting equipment and supplies. The employee is occasionally required to wear agency-issued personal protective equipment. This position is partially performed in a typical office environment that is quiet and climate controlled, and partially performed in the field.
