Exempt Position Summary:
The Part Time Education Specialist I facilitates and supports all classroom and boat-based educational programs at Tampa Bay Watch. Programs include, but are not limited to, public programs, onsite and offsite field trips, outreach events, and eco tours and charters. The Part Time Education Specialist I will support the education and eco vessel teams to provide a clean, safe, enjoyable experience that fosters a connection between program participants and the Tampa Bay Estuary. As needed, this position assists with aquarium husbandry and program development. The position reports to the Education Manager. This is a part time temporary position until August 31, 2025.
Responsibilities:
Serve as a facilitator for Tampa Bay Watch education programs, including, but not limited to, public programs, onsite and offsite field trips, outreach events, and eco tours and charters. Serve as program lead as needed. Maintain education facilities and program materials. As directed, create and maintain educational content, including lesson plans, publications, social media, and other materials. Assist with training and guiding interns and junior staff members. Assist with animal husbandry tasks related to the animal collection. As directed by the Education Manager and Animal Husbandry Specialist, take the lead to oversee completion of daily animal husbandry tasks. Handle and identify invertebrates and fishes. Serve as a mate aboard our USCG-certified vessels, adhering to associated safety and training requirements defined by USCG, the department, and Tampa Bay Watch. On the vessels, deploy, set, monitor and retrieve a 12 ft. otter trawl net while communicating with Boat Captain and crew and maintaining a safe work environment. Assist Boat Captain to dock the vessel and properly secure lines. Develop and maintain knowledge of emergency protocols and act quickly and decisively in emergency situations. Maintain valid adult and pediatric first aid and CPR/AED certifications. Participate in departmental meetings and training opportunities. Support other Tampa Bay Watch departments as needed. Perform other duties as assigned.
Education, Knowledge, and Skills Required:
Associate Degree or three or more years of relevant work/teaching experience Bachelor’s Degree with one or more years of relevant work/teaching experience preferred Knowledge of coastal environments Experience with informal and/or formal education, and environmental and marine sciences Ability to create and design appropriate curriculum for students of all ages preferred Knowledge of appropriate teaching techniques Proven ability to facilitate educational programs Public speaking and audience management skills preferred High level of comfort in and on the water, experience boating or working aboard an oceanic vessel preferred Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) preferred Existing saltwater aquarium knowledge and husbandry experience preferred Proficient with PC and Microsoft software, scientific tools and methods, and social media Strong written and verbal skills Ability to maintain a positive outlook and demeanor with guests and staff Ability and willingness to make quick, informed decisions as an emergency first responder Ability to work year-round in Florida’s environment, lift up to 50 lbs., and interact and engage on a high-energy level daily USCG Boater Safety Course or willingness to take upon hire Enrollment in USCG Consortium drug testing program Willingness to work a flexible schedule that may include holidays, evenings, and/or weekends
