Position Summary:

Florida Atlantic University is seeking an Education Coordinator within Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute

Summary of Responsibilities:

Responsible for the organization and successful implementation of K-12 programs which currently includes high school partnerships, teacher trainings/resources, field trips, afterschool and summer programs, public facilities, and more. Serves as the FAU Harbor Branch administrative lead for the on-site Marine and Oceanographic Academy (MOA) High School partnership with St. Lucie County School District. Works collaboratively with school staff and students to support program operations. Works primarily as a lead instructor for MOA coursework including, but not limited to, Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, Marine Science, and Physics, meeting Cambridge/AICE standards. Assists with mentorship and research opportunities for students in and outside the classroom and facilitates connections with FAU Harbor Branch scientists. Creates original curriculum for K-12 presentations, lessons, laboratory and field activities, and other educational experiences, ensuring that they are innovative, meet school and university standards, highlight FAU Harbor Branch research/priority areas, and are regularly updated to ensure relevance and impact. Responsible for the management of all educational laboratories and spaces, ensuring a clean, safe, functional, and professional environment for diverse user groups. Works with other departments such as Facilities, EH&S, Office Information Technology, etc., as necessary. Trains Marine Educators, Interns, and Graduate Students assisting with programs, ensuring experiences offered are high-quality, engaging, include accurate information, and fulfil audience needs. Meets regularly with other education staff to facilitate collaboration, evaluate lesson delivery, and identify/address program needs. Serves as the primary contact for K-12 programming, and ensures that all inquiries receive prompt, professional, and positive responses. Takes a lead role on coordinating all on-site and off-site pre-collegiate education initiatives. Develops new activities/programs/courses to expand K-12 audiences served. Pursues increased public visitation to FAU Harbor Branch and works to grow opportunities for school/student/teacher engagement throughout the year. Assists with group visit coordination and accommodation. Works to expand opportunities with the MOA High School and expand collaboration with the MOA Middle/Elementary Schools including increased experiences, enrollment, and community visibility. Works with Communications and Advancement to increase awareness of K-12 programs through established channels and assists with content generation, etc. to support these efforts. Attends events/meetings to represent FAU Harbor Branch and increase visibility, stature, and enrollment in education programs, while facilitating, stewarding, and growing community partnerships. Documents all K-12 engagement including the number of students reached as well as additional demographic information and statistics from education efforts to be used for overall program evaluation and reporting. Shares program successes both internally and externally. Develops and implements learning assessments to evaluate program impact. Performs other job-related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization; or a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of appropriate experience required. Valid Florida Driver’s License required.

Preferred Qualifications/Skills:

Master’s degree in Marine Science, Environmental Science, Science Education, or related field and two years of relevant experience; or a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and five years of relevant experience is required. Experience in Science education at the K-12 level, proficiency with classroom, laboratory and field techniques, as well as a familiarity with fundamentals of marine science, Florida coastal habitats, wildlife and ecology. Experience coordinating and leading education programs, as well as developing lessons, presentations, activities, and interpretive content related science and ocean topics, especially at the high school level. Experience maintaining educational spaces and scientific equipment. Excellent communication (verbal and written) skills, problem-solving skills, and working as part of a team. Exceptional people skills, willingness and proven ability to interact with public and staff in a positive and professional manner. Ability to adhere to the scheduled operation times for education programs. Comfortable executing public education programs outdoors and on a boat required; First aid certification preferred (or will be provided upon hire). Ability to adhere to FAU safety and animal use regulations. Experience working at a public science education facility (such as an aquarium, science center, museum, nature center).
