Drew’s innovative academic model of Project-Based Learning (PBL), incorporating a Science Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) theme, has effectively closed both the achievement gaps and the opportunity gaps for children from diverse backgrounds. Position Description The Literacy Coach will support all 6-8 ELA staff in the implementation of the site literacy plan and program. The Coach will work directly with teachers in a school providing classroom-based demonstrations, collaborative and one-on-one support, and facilitating teacher inquiry and related professional development. The Coach will focus on enhancing teachers’ ability to provide instruction that builds students’ sense of engagement in the ownership of learning. The Coach will work with the coaching team to provide vertical alignment across academies in reading and writing. The Coach will also work with administrators and teachers to collect and analyze data, interpret, and use it to guide instructional decisions. This position reports to the Director of Coaching. Performance Responsibilities Debriefing observations with teachers Models, coaches, and supports research-based literacy practices that improve student outcomes. Regularly observes and co-teaches classes Co-planning lessons and projects Modeling techniques and providing feedback Ensure the implementation of RtI services by building the capacity of teachers, but also by providing direct services to students as needed Be chief advocate for the content area Represent the concerns of the content area to the leadership team Coordinate the ordering of textbooks, materials, supplies, and equipment Identify professional development needs within the department and help coordinate staff participation Leads content professional learning, engages in instructional coaching cycles, and fosters a culture of continuous improvement. Coordinate professional development/on-boarding for incoming staff Build and cultivate extra-curricular activities (after-school, summer, external organizations, etc.) related to the content area In conjunction with leadership team, help analyze data to determine curriculum priorities Collaborate with the other coaches in the content area to facilitate vertical alignment initiatives Manage the MAP administration for ELA Effectively incorporates educational technology to enhance instruction and student engagement. Support the implementation of standards mastery tool (Mastery Connect) Manages multiple initiatives while maintaining a focus on student-centered coaching. Other duties as assigned
Certifications:
Minimum of T4-Certification in P-5 and/or 4-8 Education or related content OR passed the GACE Assessment OR have reciprocity eligibility Reading endorsement preferred LETRS Endorsement preferred Wilson/OG certification preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree in related content Experience with EL Curriculum (training and implementation) Deep knowledge of reading, writing, and literacy development (fluency, decoding, phonics, comprehension) History of student success in the content area Evidence of success in working with teachers/adults such as mentoring new teachers, developing student interns, serving as a grade-level leader, providing professional development, etc. Holds specialized certifications such as LETRS, Dyslexia Endorsement, Orton-Gillingham, or Wilson training, demonstrating deep expertise in structured literacy approaches. Experienced in teaching upper elementary and/or middle school students with significant decoding and fluency challenges, using evidence-based interventions tailored to individual learning needs Capable of coaching and supporting middle school teachers in applying the principles of the Science of Reading to improve literacy outcomes for struggling readers. Strong interpersonal skills (communication, problem solving, conflict management, collaboration) necessary to share research based instructional approaches with teachers and administrators and provide advice, mentoring, and coaching Strong organizational skills Work Experience Minimum of three years successful teaching experience
