Job Description

Job title: Special Education Secondary Curriculum Specialist Reports to: Director of Special Education; Assistant Director of Special Education
Receives guidance from: SPED Director, Curriculum Director, Special Education Coordinators, District Administration and Support Staff, Assistant Superintendent
Overtime status: Compliant with position, salary and FLSA regulations Job purpose: In keeping a tradition of excellence, the purpose of the Special Education Secondary Curriculum Specialist is to provide services and resources to administration and special education teachers that assure state curriculum standards are met while guiding students, regardless of learning styles, with appropriate instruction. Duties and responsibilities:

Provide technical assistance to teachers and administrators, particularly in the instruction of students with disabilities
Assist special education teachers with the implementation of the district curriculum, so competencies are adequately covered using best practice strategies
Provide professional development based on individual school needs, including frameworks/benchmarks, the High Leverage Practices in Special Education, and district instructional initiatives goals
Focus on in-class coaching and one-on-one assistance as much as possible
Keep records of all contacts
Provide professional development to teachers needing assistance with infusing the use of resources in co-teaching, data collection, progress monitoring, and specially designed instruction to both general and special education teachers
Assist in the development and implementation of the district professional development plan
Work with district personnel to update the district curriculum web page, including training opportunities, events, district procedures, district approved integrated units, etc..
Assist with identifying and developing resources that will benefit students with disabilities, assisting teachers with the student growth Apply for grants that would benefit students by improving the instructional program
Assist with establishing extended year and summer school guidelines for instruction, grading and record keeping
Provide training for teachers and assist with program and material selection
Assist administrators and teachers with analysis of patterns in testing data to ascertain areas of focus for strategic planning and to ensure IEP goals are aligned to the MS College and Career Standards and assessment data
Communicate updates and new information to Special Education staff
Participate in RCSD Curriculum meetings, trainings, and professional development
Provide professional development training for all assistant teachers on methods for assisting their assigned teacher and the teaching of reading
Serve on staff committees
Assume responsibility for own professional growth and development, for keeping current with literature, new research findings, for attending appropriate professional meetings and conferences, and to maintain any credits and/or continued education for maintenance of licensure/qualifications required for the position
Maintain and accept responsibility for any district owned fixed asset item assigned to employee and ensure appropriate use by following district policies for acceptable use
Undergo periodic evaluations according to state and board policy procedures
Maintain confidentiality
Regular, dependable attendance is an essential function of this position
Perform such other and not specifically enumerated duties as may be requested by the Board of Education, superintendent, administrator, director or established by district policy
Read, understand, and abide by Employee Conduct Policy, GAB, all other district, state and federal policies, and procedures and protocols as established by RCSD and the Mississippi Educator Code of Conduct

Qualifications:
Education Level:

Master’s degree in education or higher

Certification:

Educator license with certification in special education, AA level
Other requirements: 5+ years of effective special education classroom experience, excellent communication (both oral and written) and presentation skills, and proficient knowledge and use of Rankin County School District secondary curriculum with fidelity
