JOB SUMMARY

The Clinical Education Nurse Specialist is responsible and accountable for supporting and/or facilitating the ongoing educational needs of clinical personnel throughout Lower Cape Fear LifeCare who care for patients in various developmental stages. Provides clinical expertise and works with all disciplines and support staff which includes training, support and maintenance of clinical components. This includes orientation, on-going competency validation, and enhancement of knowledge and skills through in-service programs, based on defined patient populations and staff learning needs. Retains expert knowledgebase of reimbursement sources, industry regulations and accreditation standards. May have direct contact with patients when new products/equipment are introduced. Performs other duties as assigned.

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES 1.

Assists the Nurse Education Manager with assessing, developing, implementing and evaluating the educational needs of patient care services personnel in a variety of clinical settings. 2. Actively participates in providing on-going continuing education programs to meet these needs based on the age and developmental stages of the patient population served. 3. Coordinates assessment and planning to provide for individualized orientation based on demonstrated needs. Coordinates the re-assessment of clinical personnel at the completion of orientation and when indicated by clinical performance. 4. Provides education of policies, processes, and procedures regarding the clinical use of the electronic medical record system, hospice pharmacy, DME and other clinical web based applications, systems, and software. 5. Facilitates orientation for clinical personnel including the development of curriculum, manuals, and reference materials. 6. Assists with coordinating efforts in the improvement of nursing practice throughout the organization through working with committees, workgroups, and taskforces. 7. Prepares Registered Nurses for the role of mentor and non-nurses for the role of orientation coach through teaching/facilitating classes and acting as a resource when issues arise. 8. Maintains a current clinical knowledge base related to end of life areas throughout the organization through attendance in workshops and reviewing current literature. 9. Assists with producing an annual education plan/calendar.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS 1.
Education:

BA/BS in Nursing and/or a Master’s degree in nursing or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Graduate of an approved school of nursing, either through an AD, Diploma or BSN program. Ability to communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences. Ability to provide training for clinical staff in both small and large group settings. 2. Licensure /

Certifications:

Current license to practice professional nursing in the State of North Carolina / South Carolina. 3.

Experience:

Three years hospice clinical experience preferred. Experience as clinical educator or in a teaching role. Proficient with clinical software applications. 4. Essential Technical /

Motor Skills:

Has a current knowledge of nursing principles and techniques; adult learning theory and classroom management. Is an effective speaker before large and small groups. Has knowledge of and the ability to use audiovisual equipment. Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office programs, including Outlook, MS Word, MD Excel, and MS Power point. Must be able to communicate and be literate the English language. 5.

Interpersonal Skills:

Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to interact and communicate in a professional and tactful manner with coworkers, physicians, and agency, and other providers of health care services. 6.

Essential Physical Requirements:

Standing, walking, bending and stooping required at times. Some lifting such as boxes of educational materials. Ability to sit for extended periods of time. 7.

Essential Mental Abilities:

Ability to analyze data to identify staff and agency learning needs. Ability to teach staff of varying educational backgrounds. Demonstrates long and short-term memory. High-level problem solving and reasoning skills to assist staff in patient care planning and problem solving. 8.

Essential Sensory Requirements:

Ability to use sight to assess, plan, implement and evaluate orientation and training activities. Ability to use sight/ smell to assess patients/provide patient care when precepting new employees. Ability to use hearing to communicate and assess. 9. Exposure to
