JOB PURPOSE
Under limited supervision, assists the school principal by providing leadership in the coordination, implementation and improvement of the school’s instructional program, and works with teachers in assessing instructional problem areas and finding appropriate solutions; encourages teachers to use new methods and materials where appropriate for the improvement of instruction; helps plan and implement new instructional programs or procedures. Reports to the Principal.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Provides professional leadership, consultation and support of the District’s instructional program to help ensure the provision of effective classroom instruction and programming. Supports teachers in the implementation of research-based instructional strategies. Models research-based instructional approaches and collaborate with the teacher to determine those approaches that best meet the students’ needs. Observes the teacher as he/she implements changes in instructional approaches and provide feedback to the teacher. Provides ongoing professional development to teachers in school-based setting. Assists teachers in aligning their teaching with appropriate standards, curriculum and assessments. Provides assessment support to teachers through collaborative analysis of student work and formal and informal assessments. Assists teachers with integrating practices into their content instruction. Monitors the progress of struggling students and offer suggestions for intervention to meet students’ reading needs. Facilitates inquiry groups among teachers where current research and writing on the integration of literacy and content instruction is read and discussed. Supports the administration and leadership team in the creation of the school’s professional development plan with specific, measurable and attainable benchmarks for teacher and students performance. Participates fully in professional development for coaches, including peer observations, professional research and reading, and inquiry sessions. Encourages creation of innovative classroom strategies using technology that enables teachers to transform the classroom environment from the traditional teacher-centered lecture format to an atmosphere of student-centered discovery. Compiles data for and prepares various statistical, administrative and professional reports as required by the district and/or other agencies. Keeps abreast of developments in language arts education curriculum and instruction. Prepares and/or processes data analyses, textbook recommendations, workshop materials, instructional plans, classroom evaluations, memos, correspondence, etc. Operates a vehicle and a variety of equipment such as a computer, printer, copier, calculator, telephone, audio-visual equipment, etc.; uses clerical, copier, computer supplies. Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, other District administrators and staff, school administrators and teachers, various committees, parents, students and the general public. Attends training, conferences, workshops, etc., as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills. Performs related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Requires a Master’s degree in education and experience in an early childhood classroom supplemented by at least five years of teaching experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid S.C. Teaching License. Licensed in Administration preferred. Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
