Position Overview
Vanderbilt University’s School of Engineering is seeking an experienced and innovative Senior Instructional Designer to collaborate with faculty in the development and enhancement of online and hybrid learning experiences for graduate and continuing education programs. This role will focus primarily on supporting engineering programs, with a strong emphasis on designing courses that provide learners with opportunities to apply the skills they have learned, while ensuring alignment with industry demands and emerging trends. The objective is to create engaging, accessible, and intellectually enriching learning experiences for students. The ideal candidate will apply best practices in instructional design, utilizing Brightspace as the primary Learning Management System (LMS) to develop high-quality, learner-centered content that fosters student success. Reporting directly to the Assistant Dean of Online and Continuing Education, this position will work closely with faculty, staff, and cross-functional teams throughout the university. Responsibilities
Course Design and Faculty Collaboration
- Lead collaboration with engineering faculty to design and enhance online and hybrid courses, ensuring alignment with best practices in instructional design, accessibility standards, and compliance with institutional policies, accreditation requirements, and legal regulations.
- Leverage multimedia technologies and instructional software to create dynamic, engaging, and impactful learning experiences that foster student engagement and achievement.
- Guide faculty in the development of assessments that are closely aligned with course objectives, ensuring accurate measurement of student learning outcomes and effectiveness.
- Provide expert technical assistance for the setup and administration of assessments within Brightspace, optimizing functionality and user experience.
- Support faculty in the production and editing of multimedia content, including recorded lectures and educational videos, ensuring adherence to academic and accessibility standards.
- Facilitate the selection and integration of third-party tools, applications, and external content within Brightspace, enhancing the learning experience and streamlining course delivery processes. Evaluation and Innovation
- Review student feedback, analyze data, and apply instructional best practices to identify and implement course enhancements, driving continuous optimization of content and delivery.
- Stay current with developments in instructional design, educational technology, and learning theories. Project Management and Strategic Support
- Manage multiple projects, ensuring deadlines are met while maintaining high standards of quality and alignment with academic goals.
- Collaborate with the Dean of Online and Continuing Education to design and execute strategies for program expansion and the growth of assessment initiatives for online education.
- Work with departments across campus—and, as needed, with external instructional designers—to enhance the student learning experience, support program development, and integrate resources effectively. Training and Professional Development
- Plan, develop, assess, and deliver workshops and training sessions for faculty and staff. Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in a relevant field.
- Minimum of five years of experience in instructional design, with a focus on online and hybrid course development in higher education. Demonstrated expertise in developing and delivering training workshops and creating online educational resources.
- Proficiency in multimedia content production, with a strong understanding of accessibility standards.
- Extensive experience with learning management systems, particularly Brightspace, as well as other educational technology platforms.
- Familiarity with Quality Matters standards.
- In-depth knowledge of ADA requirements for online course delivery.
- Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and cross-functional teams to enhance the learning experience.
- Demonstrated adaptability, creativity, and innovation in addressing challenges and meeting evolving instructional design needs.
