QUALIFICATIONS

Graduate level degree from an accredited institution in education, special education or subject area; North Carolina Teaching Licensure. Successful teaching experiences in specialty area(s) for minimum of three years. Specialized training in curriculum and instruction for specialty area(s). Specialized training in compliance, regulations, and special education data. Knowledge in testing and interpretation of educational data. Exemplary leadership and interpersonal skills, and writing and speaking skills.

AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Develops quality curriculum and instruction for exceptional children. Attends and participates in specialist team meetings and staff development activities. Collaborates with other departmental offices to coordinate curriculum, instruction, therapy and learning activities with school-wide teaching and learning initiatives. Collaborates with other specialists on specifics of various program implementations. Prepares handbooks, pamphlets, brochures and documents to communicate information to teachers, administrators, parents and others. Oversees EC program development in specialty area(s). Provides staff development activities for program areas, including ascertaining teacher needs for professional growth, securing speakers and presenters for workshops, scheduling rooms, and disseminating information regarding participation. May conduct staff development sessions. Plans, organizes, schedules, and conducts teacher meetings to review program issues and concerns which arise. Provides teachers with current best practices in developing school-site programs through meetings, work sessions, and visitations. Researches best methods for service delivery and shares with schools through meetings, visits, and correspondence. Researches best methods for developing curriculum and instruction of EC populations and shares with schools through meetings, visits, and correspondence. Stays informed about new instructional materials and technology to use with EC populations and conveys this information to schools through meetings, visits, and correspondence. Attends classes, workshops, and conferences on program development. Provides teachers information regarding classes, workshops, and conferences on program development. Links with other school-wide initiatives. Chairs and serves on various committees. Attends CCS workshops and informational meetings Corresponds in writing to a variety of departments. Conferences regularly with principals, directors, supervisors, and senior administrators on matters related to EC curriculum and instruction. Assists in the selection and purchase of specialized materials and supplies. Prepares purchase orders for specialized materials for EC classes. Forms committees to review and to select materials. Coordinates EC purchases with other departments to avoid duplications. Provides teachers with catalogs and information regarding materials. Stays informed of current best materials and technology for use with EC students and shares this information with teachers through meetings, correspondence, visits. Observes EC personnel, EC classrooms, regular classrooms and various learning experiences related to EC programs. Observes EC personnel teaching in cooperative setting as well as resource and self-contained classrooms and offers feedback regarding observations. Observes students in regular classrooms and recommends to teachers strategies and interventions to use with students. Provides feedback to regular teachers on characteristics and learning styles of EC students. Observes EC classrooms and personnel to review utilization of space, equipment, and materials in order to make recommendations for the appropriate instruction of students. Visits schools on regular basis. Attends Parent Advisory Council meetings. Participates in Very Special Arts Festival activities. Communicates with outside agencies regarding EC; attends outside agency meetings as needed. Communicates with State Department of Public Instruction, colleges, and universities regarding current EC issues. Makes presentations and reports as needed. Audits and reviews EC records as needed. Responds to parents, advocates, and administrative inquiries through phone calls, written correspondence, and meetings. Researches parent, advocate and administrative complaints, and concerns regarding curriculum and instruction and strives to resolve issues through clarification and communication. Makes recommendations to Executive Director and Director on allotment of personnel for instructional needs. Serves as team player and role model for other employees in the organization; demonstrates a commitment to continuous quality improvement; supports and exhibits organizational core values of caring, respect, integrity, responsibility, high expectations, being customer driven, and valuing fairness. Performs other duties and accepts responsibilities as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Possess the visual acuity to work with data and figures, operate a computer, do extensive reading and prepare and present written and oral reports and statistical data. Must have finger dexterity and be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of kneeling, sitting, walking, stooping, reaching, lifting, pushing, pulling, talking, seeing, hearing, and repetitive motion.
