12-Month Position Position Summary The Academic Coach at Exploration Elementary Charter School for Science and Technology is a 12-month instructional leadership role focused on building teacher capacity and improving student achievement through effective coaching, professional learning, and STEM-integrated instructional support. The Academic Coach partners with teachers and school leaders to promote data-driven instruction, high-impact teaching strategies, and continuous professional growth, all aligned with the school’s mission of fostering curiosity, inquiry, and innovation in a STEM-focused environment. Essential Job Responsibilities Provides sustained, job-embedded instructional coaching to teachers through modeling, co-teaching, co-planning, and observation-feedback cycles. Facilitates weekly Professional Learning Community (PLC) meetings to support instructional alignment, data-driven dialogue, and the sharing of best practices. Collaborates with teachers to design and implement interdisciplinary, standards-aligned lessons that emphasize STEM integration, inquiry-based learning, and academic rigor. Analyzes school-wide and classroom-level academic data to inform planning, identify trends, and support instructional decision-making. Assists in the development and implementation of the school’s Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS), including monitoring intervention effectiveness. Supports the integration of culturally responsive and sustaining education (CRSE) practices into classroom instruction. Develops and leads differentiated professional development sessions for staff aligned to school goals and teacher needs. Mentors new teachers, providing orientation, instructional guidance, and support with curriculum planning and classroom management. Conducts non-evaluative classroom observations and provides ongoing, actionable feedback to teachers to promote continuous growth. Partners with school leaders to align curriculum resources, instructional goals, and performance benchmarks with NYS Learning Standards. Guides teachers in the use of technology and project-based learning as tools to deepen student engagement, particularly within STEM disciplines. Promotes a reflective, collaborative school culture rooted in high expectations, equity, and excellence. Supports planning and facilitation of summer professional development and curriculum planning sessions. Participates in school-wide data analysis, strategic planning, and instructional leadership team meetings. Leads or supports school events, family nights, STEM showcases, and other initiatives that promote a culture of innovation and inquiry. Uses Google Workspace for scheduling, documentation, planning, and professional collaboration.
Requirements:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Deep knowledge of effective instructional practices, curriculum design, and standards-based instruction. Understanding of STEM education and strategies for integrating science, technology, engineering, and math into daily instruction. Strong facilitation, communication, and coaching skills. Experience with culturally responsive teaching, inquiry-based learning, and differentiation. Ability to analyze data and support instructional adjustments to improve student achievement. Familiarity with MTSS, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and inclusive practices. Skilled in building trusting, collaborative relationships with teachers and staff. Proficiency with digital tools and educational technology. Reflective, growth-oriented mindset with a strong commitment to professional development. Strong organizational and time management skills. Qualifications Profile Fingerprint clearance from the NYS Department of Education Ability to work some flexible hours for school events, family nights, and required meetings Uses standard office and classroom equipment (e.g., computers, projectors, athletic equipment) Education Bachelor’s Degree in Education required Master’s Degree in Curriculum & Instruction, Literacy, STEM Education, or Educational Leadership preferred Certification Current, valid New York State Teaching Certificate required School Building Leader (SBL) or Teacher Leader certification preferred (not required) Experience Minimum of 3 years of successful elementary teaching experience Experience coaching or mentoring teachers preferred Experience designing and implementing STEM-based instruction strongly preferred Demonstrated success working with high-needs and urban student populations Experience facilitating professional development or PLCs Additional Details The hiring process for this position will require a fingerprinted background check through the New York State TEACH System.
