None Position Summary:
The teacher’s primary responsibility is to the mission of the school and to the Church. As a college preparatory school, it is the responsibility of the teacher to cultivate in our students critical thinking and problem-solving skills that will provide a solid framework for further academic and social success at the next level. The Performing Arts Teacher is a passionate and dedicated artist and teacher. who values collaboration, artistic expression, and a commitment to arts education as a vital component of a well-rounded academic experience. This educator is committed to nurturing students’ intellectual, social, and emotional development through a vibrant, arts-rich curriculum and to shaping young artists, fostering creativity, and contributing to a community that values expression, diversity, and the transformative power of the arts Teachers are expected to use formal and informal assessment tools and knowledge of human development to employ appropriate learning activities that are specific to the discipline, age, level, and range of student ability. All teachers at Aquinas should include the Catholic Lens in instruction and integrate gospel values and Catholic Social Teaching into the curriculum.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Responsible for direct supervision of students in the school. Provides varied instruction in a variety of performing arts courses to students in grades 6-12, including: Modern Dance, the History of Dance, Theatre Arts (Acting, Performance, and/or Stagecraft), and Creative Process to students in an education-based performing arts setting.: Develop engaging, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate lesson plans. Direct various student performances, showcases, or theatre productions throughout the school year. Foster an environment that celebrates artistic expression, personal growth, and community engagement. Collaborate with other arts and academic faculty to support cross-curricular initiatives and performances. Provide feedback and assessment to students in alignment with school expectations and learning goals. Participate in faculty meetings, parent conferences, professional development, and school events. Programs appropriate repertoire for classroom, rehearsal, and performance. Manages and evaluates students’ artistic, performance, and academic achievement. Plans lessons with clear objectives and relevant measured outcomes. Produces at least two dance concerts each school year (winter and spring). Promotes achievement for all students. Incorporates appropriate technology and media. Makes learning objectives clear to students and parents. Communicates high standards and expectations to students and parents. Regularly communicate with parents outside of report cards and scheduled conferences. Challenges students to think critically and build on prior knowledge and experience. Employs best practices in all aspects of the classroom. Manages classroom routines and procedures. Identifies appropriate reading materials, other classroom resources, writing activities for all students. Identifies skills, concepts, and vocabulary needed for learning.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
Teaches goodness, discipline, and knowledge through gospel values. Understands the history, mission, and charisms of Aquinas and is an active participant in the school community outside of the classroom discipline. Collaborates with colleagues for resources and feedback on instruction, assessment, academic achievement and student performance. Reflects critically upon his or her teaching experience, identifies areas for further professional development as part of a professional development plan that is linked to grade level, department, and school philosophy, and is receptive to suggestions for growth. Draws on resources from colleagues, families, and the community to enhance and engage students in learning and participating in the Arts.
Participates in:
Revision/writing of curricula, writing and correction of assessments, selection of textbooks and materials for courses and departments, consistency of grading procedures, professional development, Maintaining teacher web pages, weekly updates of assignments and grades on the web portal, production of interim, quarterly and semester grades. Attend all faculty meetings, workshops, faculty/staff retreats, school masses, assemblies, and celebrations. Other duties assigned by the department chair, assistant principal, or principal.
REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge and Experience:
BA/BFA in dance/dance education, theatre, or performing arts from an accredited college or university
M.A./MFA
in a fine arts content area from an accredited college or university or considerable professional experience. New York State Theatre or Dance Education Certification strongly preferred Must have a successful record of creative and scholarly endeavors. Teaching experience in an academic preferred. Understands moral and legal responsibilities of the teaching profession. Skills and Abilities Strong interpersonal skills and ability to initiate and develop open, respectful, positive, and cooperative relationships with students required. Ability to demonstrate high artistic and academic standards and foster collaboration between the disciplines of dance, theatre, and music. Ability to have students work at the forefront of teaching. Excellent communications skills required. Must be able to speak with appropriate volume, vocabulary, and expression in the language of instruction so as to be readily understood by and set a good example for students. Must possess patience and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations. Collaborative skills are required to work with colleagues in developing curriculum, assessments, and lesson plans. Creativity and presentation skills to motivate and hold the interest of students. Must be able to develop rapport with students and manage their behavior. Basic technological skills required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This job operates in a professional school environment and performance spaces. This role routinely uses standard classroom equipment such as computers, phone, copiers, interactive whiteboards, Microsoft Office/Teams, production technology.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The teacher spends the majority of the day standing and moving/dancing in the classroom. While standing the teacher will frequently hold light objects. He or she must walk through the classroom and be able to maneuver in tight spaces between desks, etc. Dealing with the students may entail kneeling or squatting, stooping, and bending.
HOURS:
7:45 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The ability to work outside the school schedule periodically in collaboration with colleagues is necessary. At Aquinas, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. The base pay for this role is between $40,000 and $55,000 annually. Your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, and experience. A comprehensive benefits package is also available.
