Belfry Theatre Director and Upper School Theatre Arts Teacher
Germantown Academy is an independent, coeducational, college preparatory day school located on a beautiful 126-acre campus in the Fort Washington suburbs near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The school serves more than 1,200 students in grades PK-12. The Belfry Theatre Director and Upper School Theatre Arts Teacher directs and produces all Belfry Theatre productions and teaches a range of Upper School Theatre Arts courses. The Belfry Club is the nation’s oldest high school theater program and has won numerous regional awards, including Best of Philly High School Theater. Casts and crews over the years have garnered 80 CAPPIES Award nominations, winning more than 25 awards, including three Best Musical and one Best Play. Germantown Academy typically produces one musical and one play per school year. We are seeking candidates for a full-time position to join our community beginning August 2025. This is a 10-month position which offers an excellent array of benefits and a highly competitive salary.
We are seeking candidates who…

  • Are excited to work with and support Upper School-aged students (Grades 9-12).
  • Have at least 5 years of experience in teaching high school or college theatre arts and in producing/directing large-scale theatre productions at the high school, college, or professional level.
  • Hold an advanced degree in the field (preferred).
  • Demonstrate an understanding of current theatre arts pedagogy and teaching practices.
  • Have the ability to create and maintain budgets.
  • Have strong organization and planning skills.
  • Communicate well, both in writing and verbally, with colleagues, students, and families.
  • Possess the cultural competency necessary for working with a diverse population in an equitable and inclusive community.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to student-centered learning.
  • Demonstrate the ability to use technology in support of student learning and other professional responsibilities.
  • Demonstrate creativity and problem-solving skills.
  • Exhibit outstanding interpersonal skills and a desire to work collaboratively.
    Core Job Responsibilities
    This role is a full-time position with the following major responsibilities:
  • Teach the range of Upper School Theatre Arts courses, such as Fundamentals of Acting, Musical Theatre, Advanced Acting, Improvisation, and other electives as needed.
  • Oversee all Belfry Theatre productions as lead director and producer.
  • Serve as an Advisor to 10-12 Upper School students.
  • Participate in Upper School Life in meaningful ways outside the classroom.
  • Other responsibilities include attending regular faculty meetings, professional learning communities, in-service days, and supervision duties as assigned.
