Thesuccessful candidate will bring intellectual and administrativeleadership experience to guide the future of an innovative,interdisciplinary teaching and research unit. The Director will beinstrumental in supporting research and teaching from diversedisciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives; expandinginterdisciplinary degree programs and enrollment; fosteringmeaningful engagement with communities both locally in Atlanta andglobally; and advancing strategic initiatives that align withGeorgia State University’s dedication to student success,innovation, and engaged research.
The Director of the Urban StudiesInstitute will report to the Dean of the Andrew Young School ofPolicy Studies and lead the Institute’s academic programs, faculty,and staff. The Director’s key responsibilities will include: Fostering interdisciplinary research and collaboration on urbanissues across the university; Representing USI, internally and externally, with the goal ofadvancing urban knowledge creation and change, enhancing theInstitute’s reputation, and realizing impact, locally andglobally. Enhancing and expanding academic programs, curriculardevelopment, and the expansion of interdisciplinary degreeofferings; Cultivating partnerships to create a strong student experiencethat meets a range of workforce needs; Supporting faculty at a variety of career stages to advancetheir teaching, research, and community engagement efforts, with afocus on research infrastructure; Managing faculty and staff recruitment, retention, mentoring,and professional development; Collaborating across the college, university, and widercommunity on strategic initiatives that amplify USI’s influence andsuccess.
This position is located on the Atlanta campus of GeorgiaState University and requires in-person, on campus-based work. TheAndrew Young School maintains a flexible work environment. Thisposition is planned as a fiscal-year administrative appointment.
TheUrban Studies InstituteThe Urban Studies Institute (USI) is auniversity-wide interdisciplinary research and teaching unitrecognized nationally and internationally for its high-quality andimpactful scholarship in urban studies and related fields.
Established in 2017, USI was founded to enhance Georgia StateUniversity’s identity as an urban-serving institution. Its research and teaching focuses on developing urban theory,knowledge, and understanding, and generating actionable,policy-relevant outcomes at local, national, and global scales. TheInstitute teaches an innovative and specialized interdisciplinarycurriculum at the master’s and doctoral level, including the onlyPh.D. in Urban Studies in Georgia, along with an undergraduateminor in urban studies.
Required Experience Ph.D. in urban studies or other related fields such asgeography, sociology, political science, urban policy, urban andregional planning;An academic record suitable for tenure at therank of Full Professor in the Andrew Young School, including astrong track record of research, publications, and scholarlycontributions that reflect interdisciplinary engagement;PreferredQualifications Demonstrated record of academic leadership and administrativeexperience as a department chair, associate chair, center director,or academic program director; Teaching and mentoring experience, with a commitment to leadcurriculum initiatives; Proven ability to work across disciplines and foster researchcollaborations with other departments and external partners. Experience with program development and enrollmentmanagement; Proven success in securing, managing, and supporting sponsoredresearch programs; Experience with developing, maintaining, and expandingrelationships with urban community partners; Familiarity with financial management in support of studentsuccess and faculty initiatives. Experience in policy school and urban universitysettings.
