Job Description

The successful candidate will hold a primary faculty appointment in the Department of Biomedical Sciences and is expected to maintain an active, externally funded research program. In addition, the candidate will demonstrate a strong track record in the development, implementation, and management of cutting-edge educational technologies and pedagogical strategies that enhance both in-person and online learning environments. Key Responsibilities:

Lead the design and execution of innovative educational strategies and programs that align with the mission and goals of SOGS. Drive the integration of advanced teaching and learning technologies to support high-impact educational practices. Collaborate with faculty and institutional stakeholders to improve student learning outcomes and academic success. Mentor and lead interdisciplinary teams focused on educational development and innovation. Evaluate the effectiveness of educational initiatives and recommend data-informed improvements. Advocate for progressive educational policies and contribute to institutional strategic planning. Support the tripartite mission of education, research, and academic service within the Department of Biomedical Sciences.

Qualifications:

Terminal degree (Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent) in a relevant field. Demonstrated success in securing and managing extramural research funding. Proven experience in educational innovation, instructional design, or academic leadership. Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a collaborative leadership style. Experience working in a medical or health sciences academic environment is preferred. Essential Functions (Duties and Responsibilities) Education Administration Developing and implementing educational programs. This includes curriculum development, course design, and instructional strategies. Overseeing training programs. Oversee the development, implementation and delivery of new and existing educational programs and related training activities. Managing internships, pre- and post-doctoral fellowships, and other short- and long-term training opportunities. Representing the program within the college and externally, promoting graduate education in Meharry SOGS and its importance. Managing technological resources. Managing platforms for online on in-person platforms, ensuring the relevance accessibility of these programs to national standards for advanced biomedical research training and education. Teaching Teaching and mentoring. Training research students and fellows in hands-on laboratory settings. Teaching in multiple disciplines in the Master of Health Sciences, PhD, and other educational programs. The prospective candidate will collaborate closely with the directors of existing programs (e.g., Master of Health Sciences and PhD in Biomedical Science programs) and the Vice Chair for Education to ensure that educational programs are competitive nationwide and adequately prepare trainees for next stages in training. Research Maintain an independent basic science and/or educational research program. Write competitive applications for extramural support of research, educational and biomedical science training initiatives. Conduct research and publish regularly in highly reputable academic journals. Service The prospective candidate will report to the Chair of the Department of Biomedical Sciences with faculty development, project development, and oversight of all aspects of education and academics. Serve on School and Departmental committees, Committees on Instruction for PhD students, admission activities, curriculum development, and other committees as per the direction of the Chair and the Dean. Assisting with various departmental duties and providing academic support on recruiting, training, and mentoring of teaching assistants and other junior staff.

Education and Experience:

A Doctoral degree in Biomedical Sciences (PhD, MD/Ph.D etc.) from an accredited college or university. Minimum of 7-years postdoctoral fellowship and/or independent experience in research. 3-5 years’ experience in and curriculum development and management in an academic medical and/or graduate school setting. Proficiency with multiple secure online learning, attendance monitoring and testing platforms (e.g., BlackBoard, Echo 360, Desire2Learn, Labster, Geofencing technology, ExamSoft, Google suite of products, MS Office, publishing software, etc.) Demonstrated commitment to student success and retention. Evidence of expertise in written, spoken, and/or visual communication (writing sample required) Environmental Conditions and Physical Demands Usual office environment Manual dexterity Visual and auditory acuity Able to sit, stand or walk for extended periods
