Job Summary
The Military Affiliated Student Success Advisor provides expert-level advisory services to ensure the academic, personal, and professional success of the institution’s military affiliated student population.
Major Responsibilities/Duties/Critical Tasks
Provides effective customer service by having a thorough understanding of applicable academic regulations, rules, laws, policies, and procedures related to Military and Veterans Success Center (MVSC) functions and ing that knowledge to the provision of information, problem solving, and information processing. Maintains the integrity of academic and VA/military-related records by understanding the information contained in various databases, changing, correcting, or modifying that information accurately and in compliance the academic regulations, correctly interpreting that information and explaining it to students, staff, and faculty, as needed, and reviewing reports to identify errors. Serves as the institution’s primary School Certifying Official (SCO) by processing VA benefit certifications through the appropriate systems. Administers approximately $1-2 million in annual education benefits paid under the Post 9/11 GI Bill® (CH33) to eligible recipients. Maintains accurate files and completes all necessary forms for students receiving VA benefits. Certifies tuition and mandatory fees to the Veterans Administration. Monitors the enrollment status of all CH33 students and reports status changes to the Veterans Administration. To ensure compliance with VA and DoD regulations, monitors VA and institutional systems to ensure accurate and up-to-date records for assigned benefit programs, terminating records as appropriate, noting all graduations and changes in student status, informing supervisors of any issues with student VA records, and coordinating appropriate support for students by working with the Registrar, Financial Aid and Scholarships, and other offices as appropriate. Coordinates assigned VA/military benefit programs with Financial Aid, Student Business Services, and other institutional offices as appropriate and ensures timely payments are being made to the institution and its entities in the manner prescribed by VA and school policy. Meets individually with current and prospective students to facilitate academic planning and scheduling and address student concerns. Assists military affiliated students with registration and academic advisement for degree programs by developing individual academic plans to ensure compliance with VA (CH31) and DoD (TA) policies. Advises and guides students into making decisions consistent with interest, goals, abilities, and degree requirements while ensuring compliance with Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs guidelines for use of benefits. Positively impacts student success and retention by identifying and advocating for at-risk military affiliated students; makes recommendations on course selection and academic course load to ensure progress towards program completion and continued eligibility for education benefits. Supervises VA work-studies; maintain schedules for VA work-studies and outside military and veteran community resources. Contributes to a positive work environment that encourages engagement of faculty and staff on issues highlighting the strengths and challenges of military affiliated students. Engages in MVSC activities on and off campus, including graduation ceremonies, and assigned weekend/evening events. Serve as an advisor to student organizations as appropriate. As needed by the Director of Military & Veterans Affairs, participates on retention teams, other campus committees, and task forces related to military-affiliated students. Other duties as assigned. Required Education/Experience
Bachelor’s degree. Two (2) Years of related work experience. May accept a combination of education and experience. Must be able to obtain and maintain status as VA school certifying official (SCO).
Preferred Education/Experience
Experience working with military personnel and/or veterans and their transition to civilian life. Experience in higher education or veterans’ affairs. Demonstrated experience with commonly used higher education software and applications.
Accompanying Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies
Familiarity with Department of Veterans Affairs certification and military benefits. Proficiency with MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams, and Outlook.
Excellent diplomacy and interpersonal skills. Excellent customer service skills. Strong planning and organizational skills, accompanied by strong attention to detail. Skilled in developing and delivering reports and presentations. Ability to deliver excellent written and oral communication in a manner appropriate to the audience. Ability to work through processes quickly and prioritize responsibilities. Knowledge of Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
