Under general direction, the Academic Advisor is responsible for providing academic guidance to students as they progress through their program. Advisors provide this assistance through a relationship-based model of holistic advising in support of the educational, career, and personal success of the student. Responsibilities Meets with returning students either in person or via phone to review registration status and program requirements and to assist with student course planning and answer basic program questions. Ensures student registration in any mandatory support courses such as transitional courses, Academic support courses, etc. Answers questions from new and returning students regarding courses, registration process, and general advisement. Maintains accurate and appropriate information regarding caseload and term-to-term management of that caseload. Sends regular reminders about registration dates including Drop/Add, the Withdrawal period, and other significant registration deadlines to students. Maintains documentation of meetings and communications with students through appropriate systems (Colleague, Advise, etc.). Helps students understand and follow policies and procedures associated with registration. Removes advising-based registration holds when appropriate and directs students to the correct departments for other holds that may impact their ability to register for courses. Manages alerts through the Advise system, which may be directed to the advisor through autogenerated processes or by faculty or students. Advisors collaborate with a student’s Academic Coach (if applicable) to ensure the student is taking the appropriate number and types of courses and is accessing appropriate campus resources in order to achieve academic success. Provide timely data and reports as requested and directed. Contacts and schedules appointments for new students to be advised. Regularly audits student academic plans to ensure students are selecting the correct classes and are on track to graduate. Additional Duties And Responsibilities Exhibits student-centeredness in the performance of all job duties. Education, Training and/or Experience Master’s Degree in College Student Personnel, Counseling, or related field. 1 year experience in academic advising at the collegiate level. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to effectively use computer programs, software (Microsoft Office Suite), hardware, and presentation programs. Ability to maintain a courteous and professional attitude in stressful situations. Ability to perform assigned duties with frequent interruptions and time pressures. Ability to analyze and resolve routine and crisis situations. Preferred Qualifications Experience working with unique student populations. Experience facilitating first-year and academic success courses at the college level. Working knowledge of Datatel’s Colleague platform. Bilingual. Physical Demands Nature of work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment. Requires ability to communicate and exchange information, collect, compile, and prepare work documents, set up and maintain work files. Must be able to lift 25 lbs, retrieving and placing materials on high shelves and on floor-level shelves; standing, walking, carrying, grasping, hearing, seeing, sitting, kneeling, climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, and reaching. Working Conditions Work performed in an office environment. Some travel may be required. May require availability for overtime hours during peak periods.
