POSITION SUMMARY

Under immediate supervision of the Project Director of Student Support Services the Educational Advisor will serve as a full-time staff member of the Student Support Services program. The Educational Advisor is devoted to providing a variety of academic support services to SSS participants who are first generation, low income and/or students with disabilities. Generally, the SSS Program Staff will focus on the required services of tutorial advisement, graduation/transfer assistance, financial literacy and education advisement. In regards to these required services, the Educational Advisor coordinates with first year faculty and college success coaches to keep the SSS program staff aware of issues involving First-Year

  • Experience initiatives and academic advisement approaches.

In addition to this specialized function the Educational Advisor will maintain a caseload of participants who are provided comprehensive academic and SSS project enrollment services including proactive advising, career planning, academic progress reviews and referrals to four-year institutions.

PRIMARY RESPONSBILITIES
  • Coordinates with First-Year-Experience (FYE) faculty and student success coaches to keep SSS program staff aware of academic advisement approaches and education delivery methods.
  • Assist Project Director in the development of an educational services program for the SSS program staff and participants.
  • Works directly with university faculty and SSS program staff to improve academic achievement, clarify learning problems and work on study skills.
  • Develops and maintains SSS program records regarding academic performance outcomes of program participants
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of the education services program through the development and dissemination of faculty and participant surveys, performance of best practices research and analysis of participant cohort performance.
  • Provides comprehensive academic advisement and enrollment services to include persistence and drop-out counseling, assistance with completing graduation requirements (2-year degrees) and completing steps necessary to transfer to a 4-year institution
  • Maintains current and accurate records and submits accurate reports on participants’ services and activities
  • Inputs data into data information systems
  • Facilitates activities to enhance personal, social and academic adjustment to college
  • Designs and presents workshops/seminars for participants
  • Assists in collecting program evaluation and tracking data
  • Assists participants in developing an individual academic plan (IAP), individual financial plan (IFP), and career plans.
  • Assists in recruiting new participants
  • Assists in the development of SSSP grant proposal
  • Coordinates workshops and seminars regarding financial literacy, career planning and academic preparation
  • Assists students with on-boarding services, i.e., orientation, new students’ welcome week and related activities
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Master’s degree;
  • 2 years of administrative experiences in project development and program activities.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the development and implementation of academic support services
  • Demonstrated ability to provide counseling services to SSSP target populations including students challenged academically in math, science and English.
  • Must have problem solving skills.
  • Must be able to travel and operate a motor vehicle and feel comfortable driving a 15-passenger van for student trips.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills (ability to meet deadlines).
  • Able to build relationships with academic partners.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master’s in counseling/social work or related field.
  • Working knowledge of student data base systems such as Banner, Student Success systems and BLUMEN preferred
