The diocese includes 38 Church Parishes, 6 Mission Communities of Faith, 7 Catholic Elementary Schools, 2 Catholic High Schools, 1 PreK3-12th Catholic School, and several Diocesan Offices (including Catholic Charities) that serve and support our churches, schools, and the local community. Following Jesus’ instruction presented in Matthew 28:19, the mission of the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux, simply put, is to form missionary disciples of Jesus Christ. About the School St. Genevieve Catholic School is in Thibodaux, Louisiana. It is in the parish seat of Lafourche Parish along the banks of Bayou Lafourche in the northwestern part of the parish. Thibodaux’s history is linked to French, Spanish, and African people that settled in the early 18th century, and French-Acadians (Cajuns) that arrived in the mid-1700s. The history of the city is still vibrant today with historic architecture and attractions such as Laurel Valley Village, the E. D. White Historic Site, Bayou Children’s Museum, and the Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center. Thibodaux’s historic downtown is rich in history and offers wonderful and authentic Cajun restaurants. As the home of Nicholls State University, Thibodaux benefits from the vibrancy and cultural activities that come from being a college town. Thibodaux is also the home of the largest volunteer fire department in the country. The fire department’s largest fundraiser is the annual “Fireman’s Fair” which is a weekend filled with great music, food and rides. Thibodaux is a wonderful place to raise a family and also a great place to retire. South Louisiana is special. You feel it immediately when you arrive. Our culture, faith, music and food will entice you to stay. The “Cajuns” make up the largest cultural group of people in this region of the state. These French-Acadian descendants are defined as much by their language and their culture as their “joie de vivre”, or love for life. Our communities are modern, but the roots of our Cajun culture are still flourishing. The Mission & History of St. Genevieve Catholic School St. Genevieve Catholic School (Pre-K – 7th), an educational ministry of St. Genevieve Parish, exists to further the teaching mission of the Roman Catholic Church. We strive to nurture our children in all developmental areas – spiritually, intellectually, physically, socially, and emotionally. Living and teaching Gospel values, we work to build God’s Kingdom. St. Genevieve Parish opened its Catholic elementary school on August 29, 1960. It began with grades K-3 (99 students) and an all-lay faculty headed by Miss Edna Ledet as principal. It added a grade each year until 1964. In that year, the School Sisters of Notre Dame assumed administration of the school. They were to staff St. Genevieve through 1969. The school reached its maximum enrolment in 1966 with 308 students, some of the grades having two sections. In 1969, the School Sisters of Notre Dame made the decision to withdraw from St. Genevieve School. After polling the parents to determine their feelings, the school board appealed to the parish council for approval of the school family’s decision to continue the school with another all-lay staff. In March of 1970, the parish council voted unanimously in favor of continuance. In the 1970-71 school term, St. Genevieve began with a full house of 280 students, 35 in each of eight sections, kindergarten through seventh grade. In 1982, the St. Genevieve Parish Council decided to expand the school with a plan to add a second section to each grade. In 1987, the school adopted the Developmental Kindergarten concept, adding a third section for young kindergartners. In 1991, the last of the eight grade/sections was added and a new wing was added to the parish/school plant. In 2004 the Pre-Kindergarten Program for four-year-olds was added. In 2022, a second class of Pre-Kindergarten was added.
