North Andover Middle School serves more than 1,000 students and their families in grades 6-8. Our entire faculty and staff work with students to achieve high academic and social standards as well as personal and community responsibility. Personal and academic growth as well as building skills in self advocacy during the middle school years prepares students for high school and beyond. Our learning approach is to offer a balanced instructional program in a team setting that emphasizes academic integrity while making an emotional connection with the students as they continue to develop social skills.
North Andover Middle School is looking for a dedicated and talented Assistant Principal.
Candidates should have a commitment to meeting the needs of a diverse population, experience working in middle school, proven ability to work as a member of a team, strong leadership capabilities, and a commitment to their own learning.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Assistant Principal shall perform the duties provided in Chapter 71 of the General Laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Under the direction of the School Principal, the Assistant Principal provides leadership, curriculum and management skills, day-to-day building administration and looks after the safety and welfare of students, staff and activities. The Assistant Principal works to ensure a safe, pleasant and effective educational atmosphere, provides discipline as necessary and follows-through on school district policies.
QUALIFICATIONS
Massachusetts certification as an Assistant Principal/Principal.
Master’s Degree. Evidence of study beyond Master’s Degree preferred.
Three (3) years experience as an Assistant Principal, director, department head or lead teacher preferred.
Effective interpersonal and leadership skills; experience facilitating communication between different groups and in group decision making.
Demonstrated success in the development, evaluation and implementation of curriculum and instruction.
Effective administrative and management skills.
Excellent public-speaking and writing skills, including the effective utilization of computers, technology, and information management tools.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervise the High School’s educational program:
Monitor the implementation of school curriculum. Work with the appropriate staff to ensure content, scope and sequence are appropriate for students’ learning at different grade and developmental levels.
Establish expectations that will enable all students to meet standards in the areas of reading, writing, listening, speaking, computation and scientific inquiry.
Encourage a variety of teaching methods and programs to promote student learning and the inclusion of special needs students into all core curricula and student activities.
Establish a culture of respect for human differences and a school climate that fosters a caring and supporting atmosphere where children can learn to their potential.
Work with the appropriate staff to implement and supervise the evaluation of instructional programs and interpretation of data to improve teaching and learning.
Provide effective and dynamic leadership to students, faculty and families: Alongside the Principal, communicate the school’s vision, goals, long-range plans, needs, and accomplishments to students, staff, families and the community-at-large. Facilitate communication between groups effectively involving all parties in the educational process.
Delegate authority to encourage staff initiative and participatory decision-making.
Facilitate and implement effective educational policies and procedures in compliance with the initiatives of the School Committee.
Establish and enforce high standards of student conduct and enforce discipline, as necessary, according to due process to the rights of students.
Actively work with parents and community members to ensure effective communication on matters affecting school policy, program implementation, and student behavior.
Provide effective and efficient management of school staff and administration functions:
Alongside the Principal, interview, supervise and evaluate all licensed staff with the assistance of the Executive Director of Special Education, when necessary. Encourage and support the development of all professional and administrative staff.
Assist in the in-service orientation and training of teachers and assure compliance with proper administrative procedures.
Work with building leadership to draft and revise a comprehensive school budget for classroom teachers, specialists, and all instructional personnel assigned full-time to his/her building; prepare this budget with the assistance of teachers and system-wide administrators.
Supervise the maintenance of accurate student and teacher records that protect privacy and confidentiality and are in compliance with state and federal regulations.
Implement the school calendar along with student and staff schedules.
Oversee the maintenance, cleanliness and security of the school building and grounds by supervising and working closely with the Senior Custodian(s) assigned to the building
Conduct meetings of the staff as necessary for the proper functioning of the school.
Performs other duties that may be assigned by the Principal and/or Superintendent of Schools.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Working in a school setting. Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer, hand-held learning devices and other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT/SALARY
As negotiated by Superintendent of Schools. The information contained in this job description is for compliance with the American with Disabilities Act (A.D.A.) and is not an exhaustive list of the duties performed for this position. Additional duties may be assigned as required. Salary of $130,000 based on 220 working days.
