Superintendent of Schools – Permanent or Interim
The Gateway Regional School District invites qualified applicants to apply for the position of Superintendent of Schools, beginning August 1, 2025, or as soon as mutually agreed upon. Applications are welcome from candidates interested in either a permanent appointment or an interim role for the 2025-2026 school year.
Gateway is a rural, regional school district located in Western Massachusetts, serving six towns with a commitment to academic excellence, student well-being, and community partnerships. The next superintendent will lead a dedicated team of educators and staff, and continue the district’s forward momentum in instructional innovation, equity, and fiscal responsibility.

Superintendent of Schools
Reports to: Gateway Regional School Committee
Position Summary:
The Superintendent provides overall management and leadership in the Gateway Regional School District, in alignment with the district’s mission, vision, and school committee policies. As the instructional leader of the district, the Superintendent directs the development and assessment of educational programs to ensure high-quality teaching and learning for all students. The Superintendent is responsible for fostering a safe, supportive, and inclusive school environment, with a strong commitment to the well-being of all students and staff.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
A. Educational and Instructional Leadership
Drives high-quality teaching and learning across the district through a clear instructional vision that supports the growth of all students.
Ensures a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment for all students, with particular attention to their well-being and sense of belonging.
Uses multiple sources of data including disaggregated student performance data to inform decisions about curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
Provides strategic leadership in the design, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs that meet or exceed state and federal standards.
Supports the effective use of high-quality instructional materials and ensures coherence across grade levels and content areas.
Encourages the use of varied assessment methods to measure student learning and growth and ensures families receive timely communication about student progress.
Facilitates inclusive, district-wide strategic planning to align instructional programming, professional learning, and resource allocation with identified priorities by leading the professional development committee and designing contractual time to meet the needs of staff.
Recommends timely updates to curriculum, programs, and instructional practices based on student needs and emerging trends.
Builds and sustains a strong leadership team, promoting leadership development, collaboration, and alignment with district goals.
B. Communication and Public Relations
Maintains a strong working relationship with the School Committee based on transparency, trust, and open communication.
Keeps the School Committee and community informed with timely, relevant updates on academic programming, district operations, and emerging issues.
Communicates the district’s vision and goals clearly to all stakeholders and invites ongoing engagement and feedback.
Builds productive, respectful relationships with families, town officials, and community organizations to support shared priorities.
Engages in active outreach to diverse families and community members to ensure that all voices are heard and considered.
Promotes a culture of two-way communication and ensures that district messaging is accessible and responsive to the needs of the students, staff, and community.
Attends or designates appropriate representation at meetings of municipal agencies where district issues are discussed.
Advocates for fair and adequate school funding and legislation at the local, state, and federal levels that supports student learning, educator development, and district sustainability.
Collaborates with state education leaders and holds the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education accountable for policies and practices that ensure rural and regional school districts receive equitable consideration, support, and resources.
C. Personnel and Staffing
Builds strong relationships across the district by engaging with staff regularly, demonstrating genuine care for their well-being, and supporting their professional growth within a culture of trust and respect.
Oversees the effective and timely implementation of the Massachusetts Educator Evaluation System outlined in the GRSD negotiated agreement and provides supervision and evaluation of all district staff.
Cultivates a positive, collaborative school culture that encourages continuous learning, innovation, and professional excellence.
Leads recruitment and hiring efforts that reflect the district’s commitment to excellence and equity, while complying with all applicable laws and policies.
Supports staff development through comprehensive induction, mentoring, and ongoing professional learning aligned with district goals.
Responds to staff concerns and grievances in a timely and respectful manner, adhering to relevant policies and contracts.
Participates in collective bargaining negotiations as appropriate and ensures fair and consistent application of all agreements.
D. Financial Management
Provides clear, strategic financial leadership that supports both long-term planning and day-to-day operations.
Develops and manages an annual budget that aligns with district priorities and instructional goals and communicates its impact clearly to stakeholders.
Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local financial regulations and facilitates audits and reporting as required.
Oversees revolving accounts and identifies grant opportunities that support district initiatives.
Maintains regular communication with the School Committee regarding fiscal matters, including expenditures, revenues, and budgetary adjustments.
E. Operations and Facilities Management
Makes timely, well-informed administrative decisions that promote safe, efficient, and equitable school operations.
Leads district efforts in enrollment forecasting, facilities planning, and strategic resource management.
Ensures full compliance with applicable laws, regulations, collective bargaining agreements, and ethical standards.
Advises the School Committee on the development, revision, or elimination of policies as needed.
Develops and oversees implementation of building maintenance and capital improvement plans.
Establishes procedures for the safe, equitable use of school facilities and equipment.
Oversees emergency preparedness, crisis response, and school safety protocols with a focus on student and staff well-being.
Qualifications:
Licensed or eligible for licensure as a Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent in Massachusetts.
Advanced degree in educational leadership, administration, or related field strongly preferred.
Minimum of 10 years of educational experience, including at least 3 years in successful administrative leadership, with central office experience strongly preferred.
Teaching experience is strongly preferred.
Deep understanding of the operational and instructional needs of regional school districts, including collaboration across multiple towns.
Experience addressing the challenges regional districts face in funding, transportation, and regulatory compliance.
Proven ability to foster positive, collaborative relationships with staff, families, school committees, and municipal officials.
Strong communication skills—written, verbal, and interpersonal—with the ability to listen actively, engage respectfully, and communicate clearly across stakeholder groups.
Demonstrated expertise in curriculum, instruction, assessment, and instructional technology.
Skilled in labor relations, contract negotiation, and managing complex organizational systems.
Committed to student-centered decision making, equity of access, and educational excellence.
Reflective, empathetic leader who values input, builds consensus, and learns from feedback.
Working knowledge of Massachusetts General Laws, DESE regulations, and public school governance and accountability structures.
Supervised by: School Committee in accordance with Massachusetts Law and Massachusetts Educator Evaluation system
