Job Description
Position Title:
Director of Special Services
Reports To:
Superintendent Summary:
The Director of Special Services directs education programs for students with disabilities. In addition, the Director serves as the District’s Homeless Coordinator and oversees the District’s Gifted program.
Job Responsibilities:
Instruction and Learning Collaborates with building principals to supervise and coach special education staff to ensure the provision of special education services.
Evaluates work performance of the coordinators and special education teachers’ paperwork. Provides leadership in program development and evaluation. Screens, interviews, recommends the employment/termination and assignment of staff or other appropriate personnel. Uses data to anticipate programmatic needs, support student achievement and recommend improvements. Participates in the development and is responsible for the implementation of CSIP. Oversees the District’s compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act including the development and implementation of Section 504 plans and protections.
Oversees the District’s support for students experiencing homelessness and ensures compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.
Oversees the identification of students, staffing and programing of the District’s Gifted Education program.
Provides leadership in technical and other area(s) as designated. Resource Utilization Assists in monitoring expenditures in accordance with the approved budget.
Prepares, plans and coordinates short and long-range goals. Collaboration Communicates with representatives of Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and various other agencies on topics such as program development, district procedures/policies, state and federal laws and guidelines. Models and promotes team processes with staff and administrators to implement effective practices and strong linkages throughout the district. Contracts and collaborates with third party service providers and outside placement providers.
Effectively works with transportation providers to ensure the safe transportation of students with disabilities and homeless students.
Compliance Meets with administrators, staff, teaching and other staff as well as parents to resolve problems and ensure compliance with state and federal laws and guidelines. Prepares and submits reports and provides required documentation as requested. Assists in writing and developing procedures reflective of District goals and policies.
Additional Responsibilities
Employee multi-tasks and must effective manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Education and/or
Experience:
Master’s degree with emphasis in school administration
A minimum of three years of experience as a certified teacher
Experience as a special education teacher
Education leadership experience, preferred
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Administrator’s Certificate, Special Education Missouri Certification in Special Education
Valid Missouri Drivers license
Language Skills Ability to read and interpret documents. Ability to write routine reports, records and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively and professionally in one-on-one communications and before groups of stakeholders or employees of the organization. Mathematical Skills Ability to calculate figures and amounts. Ability to apply mathematical concepts including basic algebra and geometry. Reasoning Ability Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to handle or feel or reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stoop or kneel. The employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. The employee must be able to operate a motor vehicle. Regular attendance on the job is expected and necessary. Additionally, the employee must be able to implement all Board of Education policies, district procedures and to perform Safe Crisis Management procedures (when trained). The employee must be physically able to react and intervene quickly during crisis situations.
Terms of Employment:
Contract terms covering compensation, benefits, and working conditions are specified by the Board of Education’s policies, agreements and approvals. This is a 12-month position.
