Durham, North Carolina Position Summary:

Hillandale Golf Course is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Assistant Superintendent to help oversee the daily maintenance and agronomic operations of our 18-hole public golf course. This position supports the Superintendent in maintaining high turf standards and ensures the course remains in optimal playing condition.

Primary Responsibilities:

Collaborate with the Golf Course Superintendent to implement and monitor the annual maintenance budget and capital improvement plans. Supervise and assist the maintenance team with daily tasks to ensure quality standards are met. Assist in planning, organizing, and executing all aspects of turfgrass maintenance, including greens, tees, fairways, roughs, and bunkers. Oversee and participate in the application of fertilizers and other agronomic treatments across the course and driving range. Monitor course conditions and perform corrective actions to meet budget and performance goals. Ensure the golf course remains in excellent playing condition throughout the season. Communicate with other departments to coordinate maintenance schedules and accommodate tournaments, outings, and other events. Promote and enforce safety protocols and ensure a safe working environment for all team members. Maintain regular and reliable attendance, and perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent. Remain flexible and adaptable to evolving responsibilities based on seasonal needs and course demands.

Qualifications:

Associate’s degree or certificate in Agronomy, Horticulture, Turfgrass Management, or a related field preferred; equivalent combination of education and hands-on experience accepted. 1-2 years of experience in golf course maintenance or related turf management. Working knowledge of turfgrass science, irrigation systems, pest and weed management, and equipment operation a plus. Strong leadership and communication skills. Ability to operate in a fast-paced, outdoor environment.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to work in physically demanding positions including standing, kneeling, and squatting for extended periods. Ability to lift, push, and pull equipment and materials up to 50 lbs regularly and up to 100 lbs occasionally. Comfortable working in a variety of weather conditions throughout the year.
