Job Description The Undergraduate Academic Advisor position at Carolina University is a full-time, 12-month, in-person staff role based on the main campus in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Standard work hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM; however, this position will be required to work some nights and weekends when necessary to ensure availability for students across time zones and during peak advising periods. The Academic Advisor plays a vital role in fostering student success and retention. This position is responsible for providing academic advising to undergraduate students across multiple disciplines. The advisor will work closely with first-year and first-generation students and serve a diverse population that includes international students. The advisor will support students in navigating their academic journey, from initial course selection through graduation, by offering guidance on degree requirements, academic planning, and navigating university systems and policies. CU is currently implementing Coursedog , a modern academic planning platform designed to enhance the advising experience. Coursedog streamlines curriculum planning, course scheduling, and student pathway management, equipping advisors with accurate, real-time data to support students more effectively. With enhanced visibility into each student’s academic progress, Coursedog simplifies the advising process—allowing advisors to provide timely, informed guidance and better support students on their path to graduation. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with diverse populations Ability to develop clear goals and plans, prioritize tasks, and follow through to completion Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply institutional academic policies and procedures Skilled in discussing educational and career goals with students, helping them identify strengths, areas for growth, and appropriate strategies for success Commitment to fostering a student-centered advising environment Primary Responsibilities Utilize academic planning tools and technology to advise approximately 400 undergraduate in-person and online students across multiple disciplines on degree requirements, course selections, and accurate academic planning. Maintain accurate and organized advising records Create a welcoming, student-centered advising environment that promotes student retention through proactive academic advisement Interpret and explain transfer credit policies and degree evaluation processes Assist students in understanding academic standing Collaborate closely with the Office of the Registrar, Program Directors, the Ashburn Center for Student Success (ACSS), Career Development Services, and the Office of Accessibility & Student Inclusion Services (OASIS) Demonstrate an understanding of the challenges non-traditional students may face, and offer empathy and support Required Qualifications Conferred Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution High level of professionalism and integrity Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a student-first mindset Excellent written and verbal communication skills Strong organizational skills and attention to detail Demonstrated computer proficiency, including experience with Google Suite Ability to multi-task and manage priorities Must be able to work independently, maintain confidentiality, and exercise good judgment at all times Willingness and ability to learn new tasks and tools, and solve problems proactively Ability to interact with students, faculty, staff, and visitors in person, via phone, and through written communication with a high degree of professionalism, friendliness, and discretion Preferred Qualifications Experience in academic advising, mentoring, or support services in a higher education setting Familiarity with Jenzabar products and systems, the university’s student information system of record Familiarity with Coursedog or similar academic planning platforms Required Application Materials Resume Contact information for three professional references In place of a cover letter , please answer the three (3) questions below in 250 words or less per question.
