Job Duties:

Academic Advisors perform advising duties that are based on theories and knowledge of teaching, advising, learning and human development, and respond to the needs of individuals and communities. The Academic Advisor must effectively advise students from different degrees and develop programs and/or resources to support student success for the College of Engineering & Technology. The Academic Advisor brings to the position a sense of fresh ideas, creative approaches and ability to execute. The Advisor effectively advises a caseload of current and prospective students from any of the degrees offered within the College of Engineering and Technology and develops services which support student success. Advising staff are responsible for academic policy, progress and ECU and major procedures. Advisors serve as academic department and campus liaisons. Advisors keep abreast of changes in ECU policy and curriculum through training sessions, continuing education, and higher education coursework as well as belong to appropriate professional organizations. They attend conferences to keep abreast of newest advising trends, career options for students and implement new technology to assist in management of advising. Advisors have multiple roles in helping students, from pee-admission, summer orientation, to guiding the student through graduation. Duties may shift or be added per the College needs. This position uses a wide understanding of each area to effectively guide students to their best fit. Academic Advising-90% Oversee an active and dedicated ECU student load as professional academic advisor in dedicated programs in CET. Maintain confidentiality and all university expectations of a professional academic advisor, including policies, program options, and student pathways. Provide accurate guidance and record keeping for student population to guide their path to graduation.. Work as part of the academic advising team within the student success center, directly reporting to the AD of Advising Prospective Recruitment/Engagement-5% Assist CET SSC with outreach and recruitment endeavors as they relate to the responsible department. Assist with recruitment and outreach events, such as Admitted Students Day, Pirates Aboard, Open House. Provide information and assistance as requested by Executive Director and AD of Advising regarding program specific outreach and needs. Contribute with other advisors and under the direction of the AD of Advising to new student and transfer Orientation. Project Management/Administration/Leadership-5% Participate on committees in SSC or across ECU in support of the SSC and Academic Advising Working with the Executive Director and AD of Advising to provide assistance with general CET community college recruitment, outreach, and collaboration Track interactions and activities related to position, notably degree works plans, course needs, projections, and other potential student issues Oversee special projects and other SSC and Advising initiatives independently

Academic Advisors assist students in the development of meaningful educational plans; promote student intellectual and personal development; discuss and clarify educational, career and life goals; help students to acquire relevant information and services; interpret institutional, general education, and major requirements; evaluate and monitor student academic progress, course choice, and class schedule in context of student’s life and career goals. Academic Advisors engage in the evaluation of student diagnostic exams related to learning styles, career goals and academic stressors and analyze student information system data to better understand the academic challenges faced by their particular student populations.
