Job Description

Parks Superintendent I State of North Carolina – Dept of Natural and Cultural Resources Randolph County, NC Description of Work This position is located at: 4401 Zoo Parkway Asheboro, NC 27205

Primary Purpose of Position:

Do you enjoy working out doors and want to be a part of the world’s largest Zoo! Parks and Recreation is seeking an enthusiastic team member to be part of the North Carolina Zoo team. This position will be responsible for providing leadership and demonstrating excellent customer service by providing visitor safety and protection located within North Carolina Zoo boundaries, enforcing state laws while engaging in parking lot and campus patrol via vehicle and/or foot patrols, recognizing emergency situations and taking appropriate action to resolve them; assisting park guests as necessary to resolve complaints or problems; responding to safety or law enforcement issues inside park and other campus locations as necessary; providing first aid care for guests as needed; coordinating with local, state or federal agencies as necessary; taking appropriate law enforcement action and testifying in court as needed; and providing security assistance for large events inside the Zoo. This position will also work in partnership with the North Carolina Zoo – Director of Security and Risk Management providing public safety services and will maintain a direct working relationship with North Carolina State Parks. The Parks Superintendent I will also include the hiring and supervision of permanent employees; annual planning and prioritizing of Zoo needs; selection, training, development and directing staff; and development of standard operating procedures designed specifically for Zoo needs; resolving employee and visitor complaints and/or issues; interacting with local emergency operations staff to include Zoo Emergency Operations staff, and local law enforcement., may present interpretive programs to variety of audiences; developing and managing special events while managing park’s natural resources.

Key Responsibilities:

Management staff, equipment and providing public safety services within the Zoo. Represent the park and the division with local governments and businesses. Coordination of recreation, resource, management and emergency service activities between the park and multiple public safety agencies; and preventing encroachments of park boundaries. Planning, directing, managing, and supervising all aspects of day-to-day park operations. Planning work operations and short-range goals and objectives. Leadership, communication and public relations. Overseeing the recruitment, selection and development, coaching, counseling, disciplining, and evaluation of permanent.

Position/Physical Requirements:

Must possess and maintain a Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission. Job offer is contingent upon successful completion of pre-employment screening(s). Position is considered “Essential/Mandatory Staff” and required to work on adverse weather days, during emergencies, and may be called to work special events. Typical work will be rotating shifts hours based on Zoo needs, 8:00am to 6:00pm; includes evening shifts and weekends on a rotating schedule. Must be available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays when necessary. Must have a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment. Must acquire Certified Interpretive Guide and/or Certified NC Environmental Educator certification (In service training). Must acquire and maintain First Aid, CPR and AED Certification. Must acquire Incident Command Training (ICS) 100, 200, 300 and 400. Must successfully complete annual in-service training as mandated by the NC Criminal Justice and Training Standards Commission. Demonstrated experience developing public safety plans and response. Demonstrated experience managing responsibilities of work team to include performance evaluations, coaching, disciplinary actions and implement/monitor corrective action plans.
