Description Academic Advisor The University of Pittsburgh’s School of Education seeks an Academic Advisor. The advisor will be responsible for various tasks associated with undergraduate programs in the school. The primary responsibility of the advisor will be to work routinely with the Department Chairs, program coordinators, and Student and Career Services to advise and support undergraduate students in the School of Education.
Duties include:
- Serving as the regular point of contact for students including current Pitt students, prospective transfer students, and high school students curious about the School’s undergraduate majors
- Creating plans of study and monitoring student progress
- Advising students on required courses, releasing advising holds, and conducting transfer reviews using Academic Advising Reports
- Updating program paperwork, online resources, and plans of study
- Providing transfer application support
- Communicating with students about timelines for required documents and processes for successfully completing requirements and graduation The advisor should be self-motivated, a quick learner, and able to employ a high level of independent judgment and initiative.
The position requires an adaptive, flexible, energetic, and creative individual with a high degree of professionalism, excellent written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work independently and cooperatively as a part of a team. Attention to detail and advanced computer skills are required; experience working with Microsoft Office, student information systems, and publishing software is preferred. Understanding the university’s policies and procedures and generally accepted principles is desirable A master’s degree in a related educational field is desirable (e.g., higher education, exercise science, etc.). Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to write effectively are essential. The applicant should also possess integrity, a professional demeanor, and flexibility working in the campus environment and while representing the organization and university at off-campus events. The incumbent must be culturally sensitive, aware, and comfortable interacting with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Higher Education Advising experience preferred. Job Summary Utilizes advanced advising knowledge, theory, and practical experience to serve as an academic liaison for students to identify academic and career goals, select appropriate courses, and plan for degree attainment. Manages small to medium-sized, moderately complex projects. Essential Functions Advising, recruitment, engagement, community outreach, transfer application support, field placement, certification, and graduation support, and program maintenance. Physical Effort Mostly sedentary computer/office work, some travel to recruitment sites, must be able to get to various offices across campus when needed. Minimal lifting, pushing, and pulling.
