Title:

Assistant Principal – Smithfield High School

DESCRIPTION

The High School Assistant Principal ensures students in grades 9-12 are educated in personalized learning environments that support each student’s academic, career, and personal growth.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Hold or be eligible for Rhode Island Secondary Principal certification Master’s Degree preferred At least seven (7) years teaching experience at the secondary level Strong communication and presentation skills; ability to manage multiple and diverse responsibilities in a thriving, comprehensive high school; ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders; a student centered leader; skilled at using data to improve learning outcomes for students Must be able to work evenings and weekends to supervise events as part of the administrative team Ability to work independently and act decisively while following the District’s policies and procedures. Experience supervising state testing is preferred Experience with Career and Technical Education is preferred Teaching experience at the high school level is preferred Secondary administrative experience preferred

Individual Employment Contract with the District 12 month position

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Lead and support District curriculum, instruction, and assessment initiatives Progress monitoring and supervision of high school students Ensure students are educated in personalized learning environments that support each student’s academic, career, and personal growth Collaborate with administrators, faculty, staff in improving the school community Observe and evaluate faculty and staff Assist in the development, expansion, and supervision of pathways of study that lead to post-secondary credit and industry certification where applicable Ensure the effective implementation of data systems and teams that analyze data for continuous improvement Lead and support professional development that enhances and supports effective teaching and learning strategies Manage student discipline Supervision of extracurricular activities and programs as well as athletic events. It is understood that the hours of a high school administrator can be varied and will include evening and/or weekend events. Provide mentorship and assistance with new teachers/staff in adjusting to the school and community Serve as school liaison on school and district curriculum, instructional and school management teams Active participation in the development and monitoring of the School Improvement Plan Help to coordinate faculty meetings and orientations Facilitate development of school schedule, program of studies, student orientation, and student handbook Assist with personnel management Share in the coordination of student support services, including MTSS, to effectively and efficiently serve all students Maintain a visible presence in the school, on the campus, and at school-sponsored activities Be available to attend and supervise after school activities, Back to School and Teaching Nights. Prepare exam schedules, including proctoring and duty assignments, in conjunction with other coordinators and the administration Facilitate school safety drills Other duties as assigned by the SHS Principal or Superintendent of Schools

SKILLS REQUIRED

Knowledge of and experience with developing standards based units and aligning curriculum and classroom lessons to national, state, and local standards Knowledge of and experience with developing the content and pedagogical knowledge of staff and enhancing instructional practices Knowledge of and experience with the RI Diploma System and developing or managing local assessments Knowledge of and experience with Performance Task Development, formative and summative assessments validation and calibration Demonstrated ability to foster collegial relationships, work as a productive member of a team, and facilitate work groups Knowledge and experience leading instructional change Professional knowledge and skills as outlined in the RI leadership standards Experience using data to make decisions Knowledge of and experience with pathways of study that lead to post-secondary credit and industry certification where applicable. Excellent communication skills, including presentation skills. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, families, and the community. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements, school committee policies, and Rhode Island Education Law.
