11-9032.00Job SummaryThe Building Principal is responsible for providing leadership in developing and implementing policies, programs, curriculum activities, and budgets in a manner that promotes the educational development of each student and the professional development of each staff member. The Principal sets performance goals, crafts mission statements, and promotes the educational development, academic success and well-being of each student through the application of leadership, supervisory, and management skills.

Supervisory ResponsibilitiesOversees the daily management of the school and office.

Oversees educators in the school, providing periodic observations and evaluations that are timely and constructive and completed based on the timetables set by the school district.

Offers additional training and guidance as necessary based on evaluations of professional staff.

Essential FunctionsImplements the curriculum and adheres to the policies and related directives of the Johnston School Department.

Promotes the attainment of the Districts Mission, Vision, and Strategic Plan.

Promotes the establishment of a productive learning environment through continual collaboration with district staff, students, and parents in order to promote self-actualization, achievement, teamwork, affiliation and a humanistic, encouraging climate for learning.

Displays a strong and deep knowledge of the philosophical foundations and content of the curriculum.

Facilitates implementation and monitoring of curriculum, including Common Core State Standards.

Serves as school liaison on all school and district curriculum and instruction related committees.

Participates in the scheduling and evaluation of itinerant personnel assigned to the school to support the total program (if applicable).Develops schedules for teachers and students that will provide for the efficient operation of the school and result in a high level of learning for students.

Participates in the supervision and improvement of the physical plan in order to provide an environment conducive to learning, including but not limited to custodial maintenance, building use, security, and food service operations.

Assumes responsibility for the schools responses to federal, state, school committee, and central office policies and regulations.

Works with special education administration to ensure compliance with state and federal law.

Coordinates all student support services, including research, teaching, and learning, to effectively and efficiently serve all students.

Coordinates, implements and completes all necessary documentation associated with the implementation of district and statewide assessments through the school.

Facilitates the analysis of student assessment data and assists in the adjustment of subsequent instruction.

Required Knowledge/Skills/AbilitiesKnowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.

Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.

Knowledge of human behavior and performance, individual differences in ability, personality, and interests, learning and motivation, psychological research methods, and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders. Knowledge and thorough understanding of applicable local, state, and federal educational laws, regulations, policies, and requirements.

Knowledge of best practices in education and educational administration.

Knowledge and understanding of instructional methodology.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Excellent supervisory and leadership skills.

Excellent interpersonal skills with the proven ability to professionally and effectively communicate with educators, parents, and community leaders.

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret periodicals, professional journals, test data, technical procedures, or government regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and process.

Education and ExperienceMasters Degree required.

RI Department of Education Certification as Building Level Administrator PK 12.At least five (5) years teaching experience. Demonstrate ability to perform the essential functions of the position as evidenced by course work and education, teaching experience, and the interview process.

Physical RequirementsProlonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds at a time.

Must be able to access and navigate all areas of the school and other facilities as needed.
