Southside Elementary Charter School was established in 2014 with a mission to provide a diverse group of Providence kindergarten through fifth-grade students with a solid step towards college and community leadership. The school currently serves 144 K-5 graders with a team of 35 highly committed teaching and support staff. Southside Elementary Charter School is recruiting a collaborative, innovative, and experienced school leader. Our Mission:

SouthSide Elementary Charter School provides a diverse group of Providence kindergarten through fifth-grade students with a solid step towards college and community leadership. Students learn to read, write, think logically, and problem solve on grade level within a curriculum that emphasizes academic rigor, excellence, and community engagement in an extended school day and school year.

JOB SUMMARY

The Principal serves as chief executive of the school and has the authority to carry out his or her responsibilities, in accordance with the direction and policies established by the Board. In partnership with the Board, the Principal is responsible for the success of the school. S/he provides direction for developing the organization’s vision, mission, and strategy; provides leadership for establishing and implementing its annual goals and objectives; and, enables the Board to fulfill its legal, fiduciary and moral responsibilities.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP

Implements a high-quality, rigorous, joyful elementary school program consistent with Southside’s mission and vision. Sets ambitious school goals for student achievement and performance and holds staff members accountable for achieving results Develops, oversees, and continual evaluates and improves the school’s instructional model and curriculum, including frequent coaching for instructional staff. Uses data to inform practice and drive decision-making and instruction at the school Serve as a liaison with RIDE and provide support for the school’s ongoing charter renewal process and pending proposal for school expansion.

OPERATIONS & STRATEGIC PLANNING

Assures the filing of all legal and regulatory documents and monitors compliance with relevant laws and regulations. Collaborates closely with the Board in determining the school’s vision, overall direction, and short- and long-term goals. Provides general oversight of all school activities, manages the day-to-day operation of the school, and develops a smoothly functioning, efficient organization through coordination with Board, committees, staff and volunteers. Leads recruiting efforts for all staff members. Recommends staffing and financing to the Board. In accordance with Board action, negotiates professional contracts, and sees that appropriate salary structures are developed and maintained.

FINANCE & DEVELOPMENT

Works with the Business Office Manager to develop and implement an annual operating budget. Works with the Board to ensure financing to support short- and long-term goals. Assures the development and operation of gift management systems and reports for quality decision-making. Supervises the schools development efforts in identifying, cultivating, thanking, and communicating with past and prospective donors.

BOARD RELATIONS & GOVERNANCE

Helps the Board establish role and accountabilities for, its committees and members and helps evaluate performance regularly Develops agendas for board meetings in collaboration with the Board Chair so that the Board can fulfill all its responsibilities effectively. Works with Board officers and committee chairs to: get the best thinking and involvement of each Board member and to stimulate each Board member to give his or her best; and, enable Board committees to function effectively. Keeps the Board fully informed on the condition of the school and on all the important factors influencing it. Provides data to assist the board in its work and makes recommendations to the board for approval of the operating and capital budgets, including all categories of income and expenditures.

COMMUNITY RELATIONS

Works with the broader charter school community to advocate for choice, charter schools, and education reform. Listens to clients, volunteers, donors and the community in order to improve services and generate community involvement. Assures community awareness of the school’s response to community needs. Serves as chief spokesperson for the school, assuring proper representation of the school and the Board to the community.

QUALIFICATIONS A

valid and renewable Building- Level Administrator PK-12 Certificate Must hold a Master’s degree or higher in School Leadership, Educational Leadership, or related relevant subject; Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership, or Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership and Administration Completion of a to become a principal in Rhode Island If you are an educator with at least 10 years of experience as an educator or support professional participating in a Fast-Track Principal Expert Residency, to qualify you must have achieved “highly effective” or “effective” evaluation ratings. You must also be able to provide proof of a record of leadership in your role and completion certificate. Minimum of 5 years of successful experience in: School/community relations Organization and administration of schools Curriculum and development Supervision of instruction Supervision and evaluation of professional staff Fiscal planning and management A track record of leading and improving outcomes for children Demonstrates a deep understanding of child protection and safeguarding and shows evidence of successfully managing concerns and allegations. Experience of leading innovation and change management, a successful innovator of school improvement that has impacted positively upon pupil outcomes. An appetite to seek out and develop innovative practices in education and ability to challenge underperformance You must demonstrate professional competencies of the Rhode Island Standards for Educational Leadership (RISEL) with an emphasis on the knowledge that a building level administrator needs.
