Create a classroom environment favorable to learning and personal growth of students enrolled in a dual language elementary classroom education setting. Establish effective rapport with students. Motivate students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for becoming a responsible citizen in accordance with each pupil’s ability. Coordinate and/or conduct with the assistance of an instructional assistant all regular classroom activities as designated by the school district in both English and Spanish. Foster respect, understanding, and pride in individual, linguistic and cultural differences.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide Spanish language instruction in one or more academic content areas. Collaborate with English dual language partner teachers and other colleagues to plan and coordinate instruction. Plan differentiated classroom instruction that addresses a range of language proficiency levels and individual learning needs. Adapt instructional materials for Spanish language learners. Work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, parents, school and agency counselors and related service providers in the overall educational plan for students enrolled in the education setting Assist in the development and implementation of the individual education service and transition plan for students enrolled in the education setting Instruct students in a program of study which meets stated objectives and prepares students to master grade level standards Instruct students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and policies and procedures of Birmingham City Schools Collaborate with the teacher of record to develop lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with curriculum standards; provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student and subgroups of students Translate lesson plans into learning experiences to best utilize the available time for instruction and to actively engage students Establish and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom by providing positive reinforcement of acceptable behaviors and modifying unacceptable behaviors Evaluate academic and social growth of students, prepares report cards, and keeps appropriate records to include attendance reports, and other recordkeeping activities as necessary Communicate regularly with parents or guardians through conferences and other means to discuss student progress Supervise and monitor student movement and escorts students to resources, bathrooms, buses, cafeteria, room changes and other activities in the building Administer standardized testing Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities Perform other duties as assigned Key Competencies Academic language proficiency in English and Spanish. Knowledge of current standards, curriculum, and instructional practices in the elementary content areas. Commitment to the goals of dual language; previous experience in a dual-language program preferred. Knowledge of methods and strategies for teaching academic content to second language learners preferred. Commitment and ability to work with a full range of students, including gifted students, students with disabilities, English language learners, and students from diverse cultural and social backgrounds. A strong and positive attitude that all students can learn and have the capacity for academic excellence. Understand and apply knowledge about cultural norms, values, and beliefs in the context of teaching and learning. Ability to integrate technology into instruction. Remain current on research-based methods and strategies for working with culturally and linguistically diverse students.
QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor’s Degree or higher from an accredited college or university; A valid Alabama Teacher’s Certificate; Must meet Every Student Succeed Act (ESSA) federal and state requirements or a willingness to meet the requirements within the designated timeframe. Biliterate in English and Spanish, able to demonstrate proficiency on language examinations as required.
