St. James Episcopal Day School, founded in 1948, is a private, Christian elementary and preschool located in historic downtown Baton Rouge, serving approximately 300 children ages 18 months through fifth grade. St. James Episcopal Day School is accredited by the Southwestern Association of Episcopal Schools and is a three-time National Blue Ribbon School. We seek to hire a full time Kindergarten teacher for the 2025 – 2026 school year. Qualifications and Skills The ideal candidate should:
- Hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and certification in Kindergarten
- Have a minimum of three years of teaching experience, preferably in early childhood
- Work well with children and employ effective classroom management skills in line with the principles of Responsive Classroom
- Understand developmental milestones of young children
- Possess organizational skills with a keen attention to detail
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing with all stakeholders
- Have a passion for teaching and remain committed to teaching the whole child
- Develop and maintain rapport with students, parents, and staff
- Exhibit a positive attitude and be solution-focused
- Demonstrate the character qualities of professionalism, positivity, enthusiasm, courtesy, flexibility, integrity, gratitude, kindness, self-control, perseverance, and punctuality
- If not an Episcopalian, the candidate must be willing to support the tenets of the Episcopal faith
- Complete diocesan required background check and Safeguarding God’s People training Kindergarten Job Responsibilities
- Support the mission of the school.
- Manage the class effectively and ensure student safety.
- Develop engaging classroom experiences and hands-on learning that promote and support intentional play.
- Design classroom centers that are purposeful and aligned with units of study.
- Encourage inquiry and incorporate developmentally appropriate project-based learning strategies.
- Use a variety of materials, music, art, literature, and experiences to provide depth and breadth.
- Have a keen understanding of the characteristics of early learners.
- Seek and build connections that sustain positive relationships with diverse learners and families.
- Know students well and provide a personalized experience.
- Prioritize social/emotional learning and guide students through their development.
- Communicate students’ academic and social/emotional progress to families.
- Work collectively and collaboratively with the teaching team, assistants, colleagues, outside therapists, and administration.
- Reflect on teaching, lessons, progress, and make adjustments as needed.
- Participate in professional growth activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned, including things such as supervisory duty and attending faculty meetings.
The position is a full time, ten-month position beginning on August 1, 2025. The Kindergarten teacher reports directly to the Head of School.
